Blue Angels

Guys,

Blue Angels were sked to practice today at 1400 local. Started listening around 1300 and about 1330-1345 heard a few xmissions on 284.25 --no call noted--sounded like he was talking to controller on the ground. Asked him if it was raining " down there".

Also listened to the Potomac controllers and they didn't indicate that the practice was cancelled but they were never in contact with the Blue Angels.

Maybe they'll try a little later if the wx clears up.

They've been going strong on 284.25 in all of the 1500 hour so far (now 1536)
It's all low level stuff and will be difficult to hear if too far from the Annapolis area.
Ongoing early 1600 hour on 284.25...also on 237.8
Scattered to broken cloud deck at 1000 feet providing a very low operating ceiling.
Mention a 450 foot tower that's very difficult to see.
Very interesting to hear how they settle on different points on the ground to use for maneuver launches...specific homes, fences, etc.
Comms have been very loud and clear for their work on the 237.8 freq here in the 1600 hour.

Tin,

I also heard a few xmissions on 255.2. 284.25 is very weak at my location but 237.8 is L/C.

I agree---interesting to see what they pick out as checkpoints---yellow slides in playgrounds, boats parked in the river (hope they don't move overnight), etc.

Add: Just heard one of them ask to keep track of wx at Andrews so they can get back in. I guess they've stayed there since the show. I would have thought they would have moved over to PAX.

Yeah, I had to laugh at that boat remark ("hope it doesn't move") and wouldn't think they'd use anything that could move between practice and the show.

Last year they operated out of Andrews too.

305.5 active as of 1703...sounds like the C-130. Yes, it's Fat Albert calling himself "BERT" and is talking to "Mo"

My cheapie Nikon 200 zoom gives me cheapie resolution and focus on action shots.. :(
Dale Snodgrass really knows how to zip that Mustang around! Pretty good for a ex-Tomcat Naval aviator! LOL

Mark, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was just about to post complimenting everyone for their shots and to say thank you for sharing them with us. I have a 75-300 lens for my Canon xTI Rebel but I haven't tried it yet and didn't even bring it to the show because of the weather. I'm going to head out to the BWI observation parking spot on Dorsey Road to try it out on the first sunny, warm day to see what kind of shots I can get with it. I'm hoping for the best. I should pick up a tripod for it before I do that. They'll all be arriving from the same location when watching from that spot.

1717: Fat Albert says he's heading back to base. The ceiling is too low for him to do the whole run. He thanks "Mo" with an OOO-RAH...305.5

Rgr Alan I noticed at airshow some people with monster 800-1200 wide angle zoom
lenses.Bet they cost around $2k-$3k a pop or more. That would be the ticket though!
We are lucky here on this board though to have members who do nice camera work at local shows
and post.No wonder the #1 Best group on the RR boards!

2014-2020: REACH 5005 calling Norfolk ATOC with arrival message. Finally makes contact and gives ETA as 0045Z. Has a couple of pounds of stuff to offload and wants info about his upload. He later adds he's got 15 pax getting off there and needs a bus for them. His ID doesn't fit the REACH callsign so he must be a replacement aircraft. It's a C-5B, 86-0017 from the 436th AW at Dover...349.5
