Useful Info

guys,

John B and I were looking for some navigational fix info. Here's what we got in reply from an ATC controller. The link has alot of useful info on it:

Ok gents, here's where your tax dollars return some value to you (in a very small way):

I've been an air traffic controller since 1982. While I'm far from knowing everything, I do know where to look most things up as they pertain to ATC.

The FAA has a myriad of publications on-line, and Joint Order (JO) 7350.8(series), Location Identifiers, is one of them.

It is *the* governing book on Identifiers in US airspace. You can Encode and Decode. And just like a bad infomercial, "But wait, there's more..."

You can also look up Airspace Fixes by letter. One thing to remember about navigational fixes- they just have to be pronounceable- proper spelling takes a backseat (especially since each fix has to have it's own spelling- two fixes may sound alike "woods" but can be spelled WOODS, WOODZ, WUUDS, etc).

Ok, enough with Airspace 101- here's the link:

LOCATION IDENTIFIERS FAAO 7350.7W

or tiny url: LOCATION IDENTIFIERS FAAO 7350.7W

Scroll down to Section 6, Assignment Listings, Subsection P, Airspace Fixes, and you can look them up by letter.

For the two fixes in question:

RESQU OA 37-28-45.8700N 071-26-49.8000W

FUBRR MD OTT*C*051.96/45.29 BAL*C*088.67
39-15-57.3500N 076-05-41.5900W

Notes-

1. The fix name is followed by the state where the fix is located. For RESQU, I believe OA is Oceanic Airspace. Obviously, for FUBRR, it's located in Maryland.

2. The FUBRR information first gives the Radial/DME cut off of the two forming NAVAIDS- in this case, the Nottingham VOR 052 Radial (rounded-up) at 45 DME and the Baltimore 089 Radial. Where those two radials intersect is the point in space where the fix is located.

Look around and investigate a bit, and this could become a handy tool.

http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraffic/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/LID/LIDHME.htmRESQU OA 37-28-45.8700N 071-26-49.8000W

1. The fix name is followed by the state where the fix is located. For RESQU, I believe OA is Oceanic Airspace. Obviously, for FUBRR, it's located in Maryland.

The OA stands for Offshore Atlantic. John sent that request to one of the boards last night and I replied to it this morning when I saw his message but I don't know if he ever received it.

I use an even better source - if there can be a better source than the "horse's mouth." It spells out some of the info and even tells you which ARTCC it belongs to. Here's the link:
http://www.fltplan.com/navaidfixes.htm
You can look up both airspace fixes and navaids from the same simple page. For instance, here's the info it gave for RESQU:

Fix Name: RESQU
Identifier: RESQU
Lat/Long: 37-28-45.870N / 071-26-49.800W
State Name: OFFSHORE ATLANTIC
Fix Category: Civil
Charts: ENROUTE HIGH
ENROUTE LOW

Charting Info: COMPULSORY
Fix Use: RNAV-WP
ARTCC: ZNY

It just seems easier to use than the FAA's page - or at least it does to me.

Two Navy pilots safely landed aboard the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt after their jets accidentally touched during flight operations Monday over the Arabian Sea.

A Navy official with knowledge of the incident said the two F/A-18 Hornet pilots, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 87 at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, had been in the air for about 30 minutes en route to Afghanistan when their wingtips made contact. The jets returned to the carrier. Neither pilot was injured, and both have been removed from flight status while the incident is evaluated. The official did not know the extent of the damage to the aircraft.

The Norfolk-based Roosevelt deployed in September.

There was also an interesting story in The Hill about the shortage of Air Force fighters. Too long to reprint here but worth reading. Here's the link:

I saw that Air Force 1 had taken off from Andrews earlier this afternoon. Does anyone know if he traveled in the VC-25? I had this on ACARS this afternoon at 7:10 PM EST:

ACARS mode: 2 Aircraft reg: ..90402
Message label: 16 Block id: 2 Msg. no: M11A
Flight id: MC0001
Message content:-
(2AAACN39345W 75237EDDMETARCYQXEINNETAD-/O(Z

Now the flight id shows MC0001, but the aircraft registration is 90402, which is this aircraft (90402 Gulfstream C-37 VC-37A/G-V 571 MC USM ---- 99-0402 99th AS Andrews AFB).

Picture: Aviation Photos: 99-0402

Is is possible that he traveled in this aircraft as AF1, as opposed to the VC-25. I may be wrong, but just found it a weird coincidence.

Air Force One was the real deal today...82-8000, the VC-25A. It went wheels up from Andrews at 1805. The 99-0402 aircraft was SAM 4243 which is mentioned above.

That's strange Travis. I had 99-0402 showing S4243 at about the same time you logged it. It was still showing S4243 when it was logged heading over ACK a little while later. It might be heading to Europe.

Yes, 82-8000. AF-2 was 01-0041 a little while earlier. 99-0042 was showing S0000 (SAM-0000) which I last logged at 18:59.

1948- NIGHTHAWK-15 ten minutes out from Mt. Weather. 241.0

2149- Got SAM-93 on the box at 7500 for a while now, haven't heard with ATC anywhere yet. Also showing 74-1676, a C-130 from Alaska, likely being moved because of the Volcano.
2157- SAM-93 finally going in. Thought I heard him mention something about the winds on 136.725. AF-1 orderwire now being received too.

2204- E-6B 406 is airborne again with a good jet. 310.15
2206- ????-31 with ZDC-Calvert.
2207- AF-1 on the box at FL120, inbound.
2212- BOBO?-31 still with ZDC-Calvert.

2225- E-6B 164408 is flying around over Iraq currently SE of Al-Kut.

1930: CRAB 20 (C-130J, 98-1356, 135th AS MD-ANG MTN) and 97-1351 (probably CRAB 21) up from Martin State on a low level mission in the area...squawking 1200 VFR code...148.925
1947: BOXER 46 (C-40C, 02-0203, 201st AS Andrews) working his Squadron freq...giving ETA 0110Z...314.25
1953: REACH 1815 (C-17A, 90-0534, 437th AW Charleston) arriving at ADW but is using UHF this time...270.275

For most of the day today, TERRA 97 (C-32B, 02-4452, 227th SOF NJ-ANG McGuire) has been flying around the MD/VA/DE/NJ areas. He's been up for many, many hours and using full ADS-B. He has descended a few times today at Andrews but hasn't landed that I've heard. After the approach there, he'll circle around and head for southern VA.

Hi Mark,

About 1PM today I heard STEEL 71 talking on 311.0...is this the same tanker that you heard?

They were talking about getting a parking spot.

Could you tell me what is HAGAR 71?

Thanks.

John B and I were looking for some navigational fix info. Here's what we got in reply from an ATC controller. The link has alot of useful info on it:
Woo-Woo!!! You rock, tnx. Now, since the airspace fixed point look-up @ arinav.com hasn't worked for sqwat for ages, I wonder to what database its search engine is linked.

tnx Ron

And tnx Tin for your link as well

No one listens to maintenance

as we used to say .... ehto vse gavno

Offutt whistle-blower punished

Of course, with all the bells & whistles they've received since we flew on them, it's hard for me personally to say whether the KC-135 airframes are any safer than the Nimrods they will eventually replace.
