Many of you may see on the news today the story that the Sherriff's SWAT did a Drug bust in West Valley City. I live in these apartments, here is my tale...

I was sleeping when I heard a very loud explosion. I imediately moved to my den where my scanner is and turned up my speakers. At this point I hear 4-5 gunshots. My scanner then gets active on Salt Lake County SO Special Services. I hear them reporting 3 suspects in custody and no injuries. I decide to goto my balcony to try and determine the location. I am immediately yelled at by a SWAT member below my balcony to get inside. I return to my scanner and listen as the pass the scene over to detectives. They then call for medical for a neighbor who was having a panic attack and hyperventilating. After medical came and cleared the scene I could see some of the neighbors outside. I joined them and we went to talk to one of the SWAT team. We were told what the raid was for and that they had found drug's and gun's. the rest of the morning News crews have been here. I was interviewed by KUTV about my morning. For anyone that has ever listened to a SWAt raid as I had many times before, being here so close, hearing the explosions put a new perspective to what they do. I am pleased that such activities have been stopped in the area where I live. This was a new experiance and I hope to not have to be so close ever again.

"The gunshots were to "unlock" a door to a exterior closet storage."

A very dangerous act, especially in a crowded environment (apartments).
Who, what will control the bullet after it strikes the lock. You were very
lucky.

"They then call for medical for a neighbor who was having a panic attack and hyperventilating."

Makes one wonder if the gunshot is why the paramedics were called.

Oh, well, maybe the taxes will go up next year to cover the liability and to purchase
sledge hammers for the Sheriff's Department.

I'm glad all ended well.

Special Shotgun Shells

Specialized entry teams have access to specially constructed "explosive" shotgun shells that are low-yield designed to blow the hinges off doors, or severely weaken reinforced doors making the battering ram much more efficient. These shells are similar to the military "shaped" charges that expends their energy in a specific direction. Properly geared (read protected) personnel will not be hurt by any shrapnel produced. Since the projectile is destroyed on impact with the door or door frame, there are no strays.

Thanks.

One hopes that is what they used, and not your standard issue 9 or 40 mm.

Just curious, who's paying the EMS tab?

The initial blast was to gain access to the apartment. The 5 following "gun shots" were flash gernades thrown in so that SWAT could make entry.

I am sure bpckty1 that they had this "crowded enviroment" under control beings they made their attack in the "EARLY" hours of the morning. Ya know a surprise attack, kinda like it took all the residents by surprise as well.

The person who had to be treated will also be recieving the bill for the EMS service.

A few notes: first there was only two flash bangs used. one during entry and one after the incident that had to be "deactivated". The 5 shots were a gun, unknown what type. This was to shoot a lock open on a outside storage closet door. Second, the loudest bang at the begining was a explosive charge that was used to blow the door open. Third, the person that was treated on the scene was not directly related to the incident. The person was a bit stressed and hyperventilating from the excitement that early in the morning.

I know what happened at this due to the fact I was there. after the initial "boom" I was listening to my scanner. after things were calmed down i was able to go outside and talk to a SWAT leader who gave the details to me.

Viper, I'm glad you were there to experience this, my next door neighbor is a NARC that put all this together. I am not going to get into anything with you but I know your little side notes are not all accurate. Third, I never said that the person that had to be treated was directly related to the situation. If you read up in the posts, they asked who would be getting the EMS bill, not if the person was directly related and had to be treated from the entry incident. With that being said, Thanks for your input.
