Good evening! I am a newbie to this site and I come bearing a question or two. Today, I received a Radio Shack Pro-106 Digital Trunking Scanner (which I'm sure most of you are familiar with) as a birthday gift. While I have the basics down on how to add frequencies and talkgroups, I can't seem to hear any radio traffic. I believe that I entered everything in correctly, but I just discovered that South Dakota (where I live) State Radio System's type is Motorola Type II SmartZone. The Pro-106 only offers MOT 800/900, MOT VHF/UHF, P25 Manual, P25 Auto, EDACS STD, EDACS NAROW and LTR as options for the type. Is one of those options compatible with our state's radio system type? Or am I misunderstanding something? Any help would be appreciated as I would hate to tell my significant other that she spent nearly 400 bucks for something that wouldn't be of any use. Thanks.

For this system your system type is MOT VHF/UHF. Dont know where you live in SD, but you will want to enter the CCs for the sites that are close to you.

South Dakota State Radio System Trunking System, Statewide, South Dakota - Scanner Frequencies

To get listening quickly add a Wildcard to the scan list you have programmed the TSYS into.

If you are trying to program by the keypad I strongly suggest you get sofware like Win500 and a programming cable cause its no fun alpha-tagging tens of objects.

I live in Todd County, which has no tower sites. It appears that the closest one to us is in White River. The next closest is in Long Valley. I have entered all frequencies, both the blue and red, into my scanner. I have also entered in TGRPs from our county, and have chosen the MOT VHF/UHF, but have still not heard anything. The signal strength bar is strong though.

A look at the database shows that Todd also uses conventional frequencies. When you program it, it is best to ask this info in your state forums. Do you use software to program or are you trying this by hand.

Did you also program your conventionals. I am not from your area so I am unsure if your area is on your state system or not, when you have software and a cable to program all the settings for a system is downloaded into the scanner that is why we are asking if your doing this by hand.

I have programmed the conventionals and I can hear the tribal law enforcement operating in the field. But when they call into dispatch and dispatch replies, it sounds scrambled and crackled. Now, from what I understand, the Pro-106 cannot receive ecrypted frequencies, however, on the South Dakota database page, it notes that our tribal law enforcement runs a non-encrypted frequency (not sure if this is the right term).

eng- as you have set up the system and go into the menu of that system. Make sure flex step is checked. You really do not need to enter all of those freq's that the tower uses. The scanner is smart enough to track the control channels. You will have to add the tables in order to hear.

If you need files let me know I have win500 already built. You will just have to dump the new tgrps in to the file. I have East and west river.

Hope this helps,

Is there a web site or a formula that figures out these tables as Wisconson is building a similiar system but the tables have not been published....Thanks....
