I'm moving from new jersey to tampa in 2 weeks and wanted to know what radio works best there? I'm going to mainly listen to fd with some pd.

Tampa PD and the County are on a trunked EDACS system. Tampa FD dispatches on VHF. I recommend a trunking scanner like the Radio Shack Pro 164 or something similar. The Pro 164 is a handheld analog scanner. The base model is the Pro 163.

Steve's advice is good. I'd add that if you venture out of Hillsborough County at all, and if you can afford it, it might not be a bad idea to get a digital (P25) capable scanner. There are a few counties nearby (Polk, Sarasota) that are digital, and Pinellas will probably be digital in the near future. Uniden and RadioShack/GRE offer digital models.

I agree with Bolt in that you may want to consider a digital scanner as well. I recently bought the GRE 500 from Scannermaster and they still have them at a good price. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's office and the fire department are on the EDACS trunked system.

I just got a GRE500 from scannermaster as well, great radio. Was a little disappointed in the 800 MHz reception though, I thought it would be more sensitive.

Station 41, north Hillsborough, is a volunteer station and they're kept relatively busy. I know there is one or two other volunteer stations but they are in the boonies and hardy get calls. There used to be more volunteer stations until some responsibility and ethics issues occurred.

Pasco County, the county to the north, has a better volunteer program. I know a couple people who volunteer for them and they like it.
