Telephone Sound

I was just curious why at an end of transmission I could hear what sounds like telephone with hang up tone.Not quite sure how to explain it.

Like when a phone goes dead and theres that annoying earringing sound.

This may be a few different things....

What type of radio system are you listening to? If you are listening to VHF, UHF channels, it may be the open repeater after a transmission, depending on the system and the distance of the radio to the repeater, the sound may be longer.

Could be a phone patch too?

Our local utility has a phone patch at the shop, any phone calls to the shop while they are all out doing work gets sent to their radios by the phone patch, you hear the phone ringing, they hit a dtmf number to pick up the call, when they are done they tap another dtmf number to hang up. Most of the time you hear the other person hang up then a dial tone and sometimes that noise when you leave the phone off the hook too long.
