Interesting stuff, the more Antenna's the better.

Im already thinking about my next Antenna, I would like to try a Wellbrook ALA 330S
mounted outside with a rotor and underground feed, camouflaged in some way so it blends in with the backyard. That would be cool.

Unfortunately the price of this Antenna is now around $460 with shipping from the Shortwave Shop.

Just as there is no one receiver that does everything, no one antenna will respond equally well to different propagation conditions from day to day. One day an antenna may provide a great signal, the next day we might have a disturbance from the solar wind, and another antenna might be a better choice.
This is getting a little OT here, so let me end this by saying that you can build wire loops that are great performers with only a modest outlay of green stuff, even in a small lot. Check out Bruce Conti's article in the Aug 2007 PopComm pp60-62 for one such type of loop - there are others, too. 73s Mike

This thread made me reintroduce myself with my RX320, and try playing with Palm PDA control.

Found a complete package for about 30 bucks on eBay. Pretty nice!!

Now no PC is necessary so the noise level is reduced, I have more flexibility on
placing the rig, it's more fun :), and I've found this little PDA to be a cool little
toy which I never had any interest in before - but one that can run some neat
radio hobby software, including control for my Uniden 780!!

I was always sort of aware this could be done, but never bothered exploring it.
Glad I did - and if you've never tried it before - maybe it's something to consider!!
It's kinda fun!!

320 Scanning Utilities?

How well does the TenTec 320 work for scanning USB mode memory channels? Like for utility stations. Does it have something like a squelch for this purpose and does it stop scanning when the squelch breaks open? I'm guessing this might be more of a function of what software one is using, but I've always been very curious about this aspect of this black box radio. Anyone?

It's really not feasible to 'scan' with the 320, or any HF for that matter, since any noise burst will fool it into thinking it should stop. However, there are a couple of packages that has a squelch function and seems to work pretty well. Included in this are RXPlus, Callsign (which despite its name is really a controller) and Gerd Neiphaus' freeware package.

At 1200 baud (which is what the interface speed is), it's not going to be a 'scanner' by any means. A package called 'scan320' (freeware) probably comes about as close as I know of to replicating this function, but it doesn't have a squelch function. 73s Mike

HF radio's with syllabic squelch scan just fine in noisy environments. This type squelch filters the audio into two or three audio ranges and looks for absence of noise with the presence of voice band audio to open the squelch. Signal strength has no bearing on the squelch action and it works great even with very weak signals. I have several DSP radios that even delay the audio slightly so the squelch does not chop the first syllable. I wish every radio had this.

Sure wish the 320 had this, but I'm betting you won't find it on today's HF receivers, that's for sure. What radio(s) have this 'syllabic squelch'? It's the first I've even heard of it
