I am considering purchasing and new digital scanner and am very confused at this time. I want to be able to listen to the Indiana State Police dispatch and car along with what used to be the old ILEEN - between states as well as Vermillion and Parke county dispatch and car as well as EMS and Fire. I have an old Realistic 2052 and am able to recieve those transmissions that are still on high band and low band -- but can not get anything else. I have been told that I need to purchase a digital scanner - but then I was told that the Indiana State police was encrypted. I talked with people at scanner master and they say that I need a GRE-PSR 600 or a BCD 996T and they will program it for me to get what I am wanting. Please help -- I am so confused and really dont want to throw away 5 or 6 hundred dollars if I am not able to listen to those agencies.
Thanks

Who told you Indiana State Police was encrypted? They may use encryption on a few talk groups sometimes, but from what I've seen it is far from full-time encryption. The 996 or PSR-600 should do everything you want for scanning.

I didn't realize that the ILEEN frequency (155.475) was even used anymore.

Thanks GTO -- as you can tell -- I am pretty ignorant about the newer areas of scanning. I used to have a couple of scanners years ago -- and I still have a pro 2052 that has some 800 frequencies as well as some low and high band. I have hung onto all my old frequencies and ILEEN is one of them. I do not have a clue what is out there now and what is not. So - it sounds like what I hear you saying is that if I get either of those digital scanners and have scanner master program it - that I should be able to hear what I am wanting -- right? Now when I select the 800 channels - all I get is that machine gun sound. So I am listening only to those channels that still use high band. Not much interest there. I would certainly appreciate any information that you might offer me.
Thanks

jrbuker - what you are hearing with the machine gun sound is the digital but your scanner can't decode it. A Uniden BCD996 or GRE-PSR600 can. GTO 04 is correct, there is little encryption, the only encryption I have heard is on the State Police Drug Squad talk group.

If you get a 996 and it costs you money to have scanner master program it, just download the free usd software from the uniden site and go out to my website and download the usd files for that area. I have most of the talkgroups defined for Parke and Vermillion county with the SAFE-T systems in those areas. http://www.n9wp.com/scan/usd-files.htm

Many of the counties in your area and the State police are pretty much on the SAFE-T system. Some fire dispatch pagers you may hear on vhf frequencies. If you are close enough to Illinois, several of those counties on the border in Illinois are still on VHF and you may be able to listen to them, like Danville, IL. There is probably very little, if any traffic on ILEEN now.

N9WP - Thanks for your help -- however I have no idea how to go about downloading the software from Uniden and I would not have a clue as to how I would download the files from your website. I am not familiar with any of those processes to program the newer digital scanners from the web. The only experience that I have had with programming would be to manually input the frequencies to the channel that you want it to reside in. I dont even understand what trunking is or how to use it. So as you can see -- I am certainly a novice in the new digital scanner area. I did look at the manual that my brother has on a pro 96 that he just purchased. very confusing to say the least. Apparently Radio Shack downloaded the program for him and we are not even sure that it is correct.
Thanks again for your help -- and once again - I certainly would appreciate any and all information that you offer.

jrbuker - Yeah, it can be hard at first but once you figure out how to program it by computer, you'll wish all your previous scanners were that way. The newer scanners and trunk systems are a lot to take in and there is a higher learning curve over the tradional scanners, that's for sure.

I am working on a "how to" on downloading and using my usd files but it may be weeks before I'm able to post it on my website. So before you buy and if you decide on the Uniden scanner, see if I've posted the "how to" on my site. I'll have pics showing how to do things, step by step...Just have to get it done!

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I did download and look at your files that you gave me the link to. I looks like the software should just allow me to pick and chose what I want copied over into my scanner -- just like copy and paste. However - how do I select what to put into the trunking system and how do I know what to put into it? Or - do I just highlight everything that I downloaded from your link after it has been unzipped and say copy it to my scanner and it will automatically go where it is supposed to go - automatically knowing what goes into what place when it gets to the scanner. Also - does your files include all the state dispatch and mobile for my area - which is the Terre Haute State police district. I see that it looks as if vermillion and parke counties are both there -- but I did see some files that say "star" behind them. one says verm2star --
What happens if I just select everything in your file and move it to the scanner -- will it be done and ready to listen to for my area? And will it attach an alpha name to the readout when it stops on a channel -- like it will says vermillion co instead of channel 12.
Thanks again -- I know I am asking alot of questions - but I seriously do not know what I am doing at all and do not know where to get answers to my ignorance.

It is complicated. You have to download my usd files and put them where the Uniden usd program is set to look for them at. With that free Uniden software, you can pick and choose what you want downloaded to the scanner. You can also go in and change the files if you wish. I'm going to try to finish up my "how to" document because there will be pictures showing you exactly what to do in step by step instructions.

The files labeled Vermillion and parke safe-t will not only have those counties in them but also the state pd. The verm. star is the new digital trunk system the Illinois state pd uses in Illinois. I travel to Illinois a lot and that's why those are in there. All the talk groups have the alpha name programmed with them so you would see ISP Terre Haute displayed instead of just the talkgroup number or channel.

Like I said, I'll try to get that document done and posted to my websight. Your not the first person that could use a "how to" for loading my files, I get emails all the time.

If you have any other questions, just let me know.
