hi guys

im a uk citizen resident in thailand

i dont have a clue about all this. basically i want to be able to receive transmissions from worldwide radio station, mainly music, but also discussions and news.

eventually i want to get into ham radio but i have a lot of studying to do before that.

any tips on how to start would be appreciated

if u mean BBC , everything these days is on line if u have data/wifi you are good to go
music is all online ,
scanner (is also online) that's another matter , start w/@ cheap dongle & laptop
Ham radio that's another matter, are u wanting a thai ham ticket or based out of uk ? Id imagine the UK one is better to obtain , as u allready citizen of that country
lot's of resource here for getting started , but sadly for thailand i'm not aware of anything

There are several things to consider here...first off you need to learn what areas of the world are in daylight and which are in darkness. A good rule of thumb is to listen above 10 Mhz during the day below at night. There are many online sites that can show you this. To put it very simply solar radiation causes changes in our ionosphere that absorbs low frequency HF during the day.

The Kiwi networks are the gold standard for web radios, but as shown above there are a great many others. You have another thread on antennas so I won't dive into that here.
