One thing that helps me is re-framing the sound as a field of crickets on a summary night. I've owned several white noise machines that help some. Some of the very high-end medical sound machines have a tinnitus circuit. The last time I checked this unit was over $200.

This is still unproven science, but I recently read that using bone conduction headphones can be used to help reduce tinnitus. There are tracks available on youtube that are targeted towards different frequencies that you would match with your own internal tinnitus "noise". The theory behind it is that you can basically condition your brain to ignore or quiet down the tinnitus sound.

I don't really know too much more about it, but it came up in some reviews when when I was looking up bone conduction headphones.

I've really noticed it for a few years. I saw a doctor and audiologist. they say it can be brought on by a variety of things, one is stress. but in my case a very stressful persecuting job environment likely brought it on for me.

im wondering if its muscle related. i can grit my teeth and the muscles on the side of my face tighten and the SAME tinnitus sound gets 2 times as loud. once i stop gritting my teeth, the extra level is gone.

Mines pretty bad - for about 6 years now, A swarm of cicadas that never die!!! Probably due to abuse/lack of protection at the drag races, concerts, and the occasional grinder in my shop. I've also lost 50% in the left, and 30% in the right.

I went to a hearing and balance clinic. I got fitted for hearing aids in both ears and if there is any kind of ambient noise, it lessens significantly. Dead quite and it's loud as heck.

Sound machines work a bit at night. The clinic was able to narrow it down to an equivalent frequency(s) that it sounds like to me. With that we played with different white/pink/brown etc noises until we found one that cancels it the best.

For the past three years its been heaven compared to before - It was really making me nuts.

That said - do the radio systems speed up the speech of the public safety entities? Good lord they jabber fast - how the heck to you make some of it out?

For me it's a tone of around 15.000Hz that can start when I wake up in the morning or when I go to bed or during the day when working hard or when relaxing. It just starts out of the blue without any special condition being linked to it that I know of and its always the same frequency and are placed dead center between my ears.

Sometimes when I do hearing tests, where you push a button when you start to hear a faint tone in your headphones, I had my tinnitus starting and it became almost impossible to do that test as I didn't know if I heard a test tone or it was just the tinnitus tone.

I usually turn on my FM radio, tuned to a normal music/talk show station, set to a 30 min timer when I go to bed and that helps as I always go to sleep before the timer runs out.

I've had tinnitus most of my life. Mine is a high pitched ringing sound, almost like a 3 KHz tone. Usually it's in the background and I don't hear it as I go about my daily business, but it is more noticeable when trying to sleep and it gets louder if I concentrate on it. More recently I have also started hearing humming and vibrations in my ear in a very quiet room.

I read something a while ago that Tinnitus has nothing to do with the ear but rather the brain. But I think it was an advertisement for a product so it might be bogus.

My audiologist told me it's your brain reacting to the loss of signal. Kind of like an alarm to let you know there's a problem with your ears. Thanks brain, 20 years in I'm aware.

As a long time sufferer of tinnitus caused by loud concerts, air hammers, and lackadaisical concern, I read many articles about it.

This might get some chuckles, but it is a different approach in that it rewires your brain.

Mine was caused by 8 years in artillery. The worthless ear plugs issued didn't do much to protect my ears when standing next to a 155 howitzer going off. Have noticed the more tired I am the louder the ringing is. Have learned to live with it. Hearing aides help when in a large crowd. Otherwise, try to read lips.

Mine was caused by hearing loss. Hearing aids with tinnitus sounds reduces it while wearing them. At night I use a sleep machine that I can adjust frequencies and sounds.

I was told by a doctor the minute hair follicles in the inner ear die off that vibrate for your hearing which then the brain tries to make up for it by producing additional noise , it's a real PIA ,....

After...before...during...yep. Yay, jet engines and power carts...
Kind of the same, jets (I can't talk about it), guns and the one that made it is terrible next. I home RN told me wrong **** doing IV stuff for a week back in late October at home after getting out of the hospital for 3 weeks. It was tolerable early, now hard to sleep sometimes. You would think at this point they would have something to relieve it being so common.

Isn't that what weed is used for? Do doctors prescribe that medical treatment in certain states?

Nope, it is not on the approved list of ailments to receive medical marijuana in my state.

Getting back to the original question can listening to the scanner itself, alone, in a "normal" manner and uninfluenced by any other factor, cause it, you've got to wonder🙂.

Yeah i have noticed that as well. The vocoder seems to get very confused. I think it has to do with dispatch operators. Very annoying.

On the other hand I am very sure that television programs, sitcom reruns and news stations use Eventide Harmonizer technology to cram as much as they can in the program to accommodate more commercials. From Wikipedia:

Not sure what your state considers medical marijuana. I can personally report that CBD products are entirely useless for tinnitus or any other pain I have tried it for. the "real stuff" may work much better. I have a friend, a heavy user from way back. He reports perfect health. There could be other explanations, but go figure.

NORML has a guide to laws in each state. They vary greatly. I think the best argument is the debilitating condition aspect.

I think there was a class action lawsuit regarding ear plugs provided by a certain vendor to the military.
