TK-2180 encryption question

Using 89D.
Fairly simple conventional system setup. Doesn't have the option board.

Radio is configured to be scrambler button selectable across all talkgroups/personalities/whatever Kenwood calls them. (channels?)

Looking at a per-channel basis, the 'scrambler setting' box is unchecked, and the 'scrambler code' is grayed out, but listed as 1.

I didn't see anything in the 'optional features' tab, I saw nothing. On the 'extended functions' tab, the 'optional board' is set to none, and 'Voice Scrambler' is set to 'Echo PTT' unchecked.

What am I missing here? Also, is there a Kenwood 'scrambler' to Midian code conversion chart floating around?

Without the optional scrambler board, you only have two options:
1. Scrambler on
2. Scrambler off

With the optional board, you would have the option of Scrambler code 1-16.

the standard scrambler is simple voice inversion scrambling. If I recall correctly, it's 180º phase inversion.

That would also explain why you have to disengage scrambler or the clear traffic is all garbled. Thanks!
