I thought I could just buy a scanner, and it could scan area frequencies and stop at, some what, clear transmissions of local fire, police, EMS, etc.... That's what I thought my grandpa did.

Maybe he did. But not me. I got a Uniden Bearcat that has taken me a few hours to finally start to understand. I did manage to program some local municipalities successfully finally, but it's become a challenge to hear more.

I live on the border of Essex county, so I'd like to start programming some of them.

Maplewood and Millburn. Are they P25? They have a lower frequency listed on RR, I tried programming using "conventional" and got nothing but constant static.

Can anyone advise on Essex county and/or Maplewood and Millburn? Also, what is the standard range around here for the stock telescopic antenna?

LMK.

Thanks Scanners!

The database here will show you the agency and whether they are analog or digital. And if they are in the clear or not.

That's your issue. No one publicly answered him so I did. I have no way to know you privately pm'd him.
