• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I’m trying to program a recently acquired TP8120 UHF radio and I keep getting a database mismatch error. I think I may have some glitch in this radio because my firmware version shows FW Vers 22.47.20 and Main DB 90.02. This seems very odd since my other TP8100’s show FW Vers 1.08.00 and Main DB 1.03.00. Do I have corrupt firmware? This radio came from Canada and I’m in the US but I don’t think that should matter since there doesn’t seem to be different versions across the two countries. If it’s firmware, can someone get me a correct clean version for the TP8120? Thanks!!!

Hello
I used to use these radios back in my country; I am a former volunteer firefighter.
I just bought 3 of these radios. But when I try to connect to the programming software and click on read, an error appears (" The radio database version is not supported. Please upgrade"). I tried to upgrade it, but since I cannot access the radio, I couldn't save the calibration settings.
So, I tried to do it without saving those settings. Now, I have one radio needing calibration haha. But again is the same, when I tried to calibrate it with the program, sometimes it says "No prompt returned. [geltem]" :( HELP!!

Is there a resolution to this? I am in the same boat and very angry and frustrated. I cannot believe how poorly documented these radios are.

It is highly probable as you guys are discovering you have a mismatch between firmware and CPS and this is because typically firmware at V22.X.X or something like this is customer specific custom firmware.

This is very common practice and custom firmware requires custom CPS which you will never find. Custom firmware is often implemented to allow integration of console features thing like emergency alarms and signalling as an example.

The simple fix is a flash back to generic factory firmware and use the matching or most current CPS usually. If a customer and application can handle generic CPS and Firmware that's what will always be issued first.

Generic firmware is available in 2x formats being MPT type and Conventional type.

For version TP8100 series portable radios

Conventional V1.12.00 and MPT V2.13.00

The matching CPS is V2.16.00 for both types.

The matching USB driver is V2.9.0.5 for the factory programming cable

The matching TP8100 Calibration Application is V2.15.00.0000

The Firmware upgrade tool V1.27.1.23

This information is valid from <2020 , however this product is getting quite old and may be at end of life so there is still later CPS and Calibration support but not necessarily firmware updates.

Programming cables are a 2x part kit consisting of a Mobile radio cable TAIT USB TO RJ11 PROGRAMMING CABLE PN T03-00118-0601 with a pig tail adaptor DB9 SERIAL PROGRAMMING CABLE PN T03-00118-5101

They can be purchased as two part numbers and together retail for about USD $ 290.00 available Ex USA distributors.

A generic Chinese made aftermarket portable direct to USB single cable are easily sourced through New Zealand and Australia and available for AUD $ 80.00 plus shipping so a very simple reliable for USA cheap aftermarket option.

Reliable and pretty tough hardware radios with a lot of heritage in mining and emergency services (Prior to P25 roll out) so worth persisting to recycle them. Also a lot of support an knowledge in the communities closer to the manufacturers point of origin.

Thank you for the detailed response and follow up. I do really like the radios, but the numerous issues I had just getting the CPS software to run has turned me off to buying any more--at least of this particular model. While the radios themselves are really nice, easy to use, and have a really sturdy feel, they're really just not a good fit for me in this case.

carrionj50 above was kind enough to converse with me via email and assisted me with the process you described--flashing firmware to the stock version, and this did allow me to then read/write to the radio. So big thanks to him for that assistance and time.

Hopefully this forum post will help someone else in the future.

Also, for the permanent record, I could NOT get the CPS software to run on any PC other than my 32-bit Dell Latitude running Windows XP. I also had to play around with installing different old Visual C++ (vcredistx86/64) versions. Windows 10 absolutely did not work, compatibility mode or not. I did not attempt in Windows 7.
