nope he disappeared off adsb pretty far out- but I was listening to ELP Tower when he was cleared to land and then given ground instructions

He disappeared around the Roswell area.

Typically they do not turn it off, but gets lost below about 1000 ft

The reason for the spotty coverage is because the aircraft actually isn't broadcasting its location. Instead, the aircraft is broadcasting its address, altitude and a few other parameters (google 'MODE-S' for more info). ADSBX derives the position of the aircraft in a process called multilateration (MLAT). You know where the fixed ground based receivers are, you don't know where the source is. The signal will reach the different receivers at different times. If the receiver clocks are accurate enough, you can do the math to find the location of the signal source.

He turned South into Mexico and was given a --maintain 22k altitude due to traffic-- so in addition the possibility of coverage (I am seeing 2 commercial flights to the South however)
he might be dark for another reason
who knows...
