Mark Davis from Union Pacific confirms there was a derail of a Union Pacific Grinder at 11am.
A grinder is a set of machines that helps to align the tracks, much like aligning the rotors on car breaks.
The grinder was going downhill and derailed at "Midas" in placer county.
CDF Grass Valley says there is possibly one person dead, and several others trapped inside the train. The location they have for this is "Kersage Mill and Casa Loma".

The only tank car that a grinder would -normally- be pulling would have water in it, which gets sprayed on the track structure to prevent brush fires on the right-of-way.

Air ambulance has arrived; several ground ambulances arrived. CDF has requested another fire crew, a dozer and to notify Fish & Game. They provided statistics of the amount of DIESEL fuel and HYDRAULIC fluid that was on board the train. I am hearing now only one person missing.

Command CDF command 1; on site tac CDF tac 9; lots of talk on other agencies as well (Placer Sheriff, etc).

Sheriff Edward N. Bonner releases the following:
Both victims of the Union Pacific train derailment on November 9, 2006, have been identified.

Wade Hanstad, 32, of Montello, Nevada, and Joe Vosquez, 24, of Hondo, Texas, have been identified as the workers who were killed when a westbound Union Pacific track maintenance train derailed near Baxter on Thursday, November 9.

Hanstad was partially pinned by a rail car and Vosquez was found inside one of the burned cars. Both Hanstad and Vosquez were believed to have been in a rail car near the back of the train attempting to apply an emergency braking system when the train derailed.

No cause of death has been determined at this time.
