trouble setting up CTCSS

When I change the CTCSS from (85.4 (factory default) to 123 (local repeater) the radio goes a little crazy...when I press the PTT the correct frequncy shows up, but it flashes, along with the transmit light (about 2x a second). Once I set it back to 85.4, everything looks ok.

Anybody know what's going on? thanks in advance

But I will help you anyway. First I need to know what radio you are using and what repeater output freq and offset.
