How many talk groups can you have in a Motorola 800MHz Type II standard system? I have a Uniden 396 using the UASD software and I'm getting an error when I try to write to the scanner that I have too many talk groups.

Thanks,
Dan

Per system; consider (if you have too many you want to listen to) revising the programing and set up multiple systems on the system using a Talk Group division to determine the system you are currently listening to. For example, say you produce 3 separate systems for the same TRS, one for Law Enforcement TG's, one for Fire/EMS, one for everything else. Assign each system to a separate SQK and then you can toggle them on/off as your listening desire wants.

Thanks, Lou. Thats what I was thinking of doing. Here on RR my county has 244 TG. I'm also finding TG for my county that are not listed here on RR. I would like to have a "complete system" and lockout what I don't to listen too. I would also like to by monitoring find any new TG's that pop up. I'm going to do some more thinking on this and see what I can come up with.

Thanks,
Dan

TGID vs Site Limit

I was looking at the 996 documentation and find that it is capable of 256 sites, but only 250 talk groups per system. I’m in Colorado and find that the solution of adding several ‘extra’ systems just to get the extra talk group’s bogs down the scanner. The GPS function with the GPS-18 works rather well on cutting down the existing 140 or so sites to a manageable number. As the scanner is capable of handling 6000 objects, it should not be that hard to make it capable of being able to program in the over 1400 listed talk groups in RR’s database. Currently I have my two 996’s semi full at about 35%.

The 1000 conventional channels is great but the receiver of the 996 is not so good when used outside of a digital system, as compared to my 796 or 296.

Is there any thing that can be done on the Uniden side to open up the Talk Group limit? This would make this a much more useful radio. I would also suggest that the number of group quick key’s per system could be raised to 100.

Love the scanner and even the UASD software, just a few limitations I didn’t really expect till I got to reading the fine print and programming it.

If you are scanning at home you can use software like my ID Tracker II to have unlimited talkgroups. The main reason I wrote ID Tracker was to get around the limits of the scanner. There may be other software such as Butel's programs that may also provide the same capabilities.
