Is UHF AM or FM?

What kind of transmissions on UHF are you talking about? "UHF" (an abbreviation for "ultra high frequency") refers to a range of frequencies covering 300 MHz to 3 GHz (or measured by wavelength, 10 cm to 1 m). Any mode can be used in this range. I can think of:

> FM (narrow bandwidth) for public safety, ham radio repeaters, FRS / GMRS, business radio, cordless phones, etc., etc.
> FM (wide bandwidth) for NTSC audio
> FM (TV) for 1.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz ATV transmissions
> AM for military air transmissions
> SSB for ham radio operations
> CW for ham radio operations
> P25 (not sure of the actual modulation) for public safety
> MotoTRBO (not sure of the actual modulation) for business and public safety
> Wi-Fi data (not sure of the actual modulation) for internet / LAN access
> CDMA / 1xEVDO / etc. etc. for cell phones
> etc.

IT depends. What area of the UHF Band are you asking about??

225-400 Mil Air is typically AM, but there is a portion 380-400 that also is
shared [for now] with NEW FM users.

406-420 Federal is FM
420-450 Amateur is AM/FM mix
450-512 Business, Public Safety is FM

UHF = Ultra High Frequency and has NOTHING to do with whether the signal is AM, FM or something else. In other words, UHF refers to the "band" that the frequency is in.

AM and FM are types of modulation. There are plenty of other modes of modulation as well. Your cable TV uses one type (often QAM), your cell phone uses another type, over-the-air TV uses another type, and so on.

But let me address your question from another angle. Since most people here are using scanners, I suspect that your question has to do with determining what MODE to set your scanner to for a given frequency. CB and aircraft frequencies use AM and most other signals are FM. When you enter a frequency into a scanner, most will set the mode to the most likely setting for that frequency. If the UHF frequency is most commonly used by aircraft, it will use AM; otherwise FM.

Uhf is a band, and am,fm,ssb, fsk, sstv, fstv are ALL modes of transmission. That being said,UHF can be any of those modes, depending on what you want to hear?
VHF again,is a band and same above follows.
This is as simply as I can put it. :)
