Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, I am about to dip my toe into the pager world and was wondering what the best practice is for programming statewide systems. I want to program items from STARS in Virginia and more specifically, Virginia State Police. What is the best way to do this in PPS?

The latest version of PPS lets you import directly from Radio Reference. It's very easy to pick talkgroups you want to hear and build a knob position for it now. You can just select the talkgroups you want and not do a massive site/tg import into PPS.

Keeping in mind to do STARS, you'll need a VHF G5 (7/800 and VHF) or look at G2/G3 options.

If you build a trunked system in PPS with multiple sites, when you select that knob it will lock on to the site with the best signal and stay with it until you lose signal, then find the next one. If you want to do 1 site at a time, you'll need to import then one at a time.

Right, the one I am going to get is the VHF G5. So I could import all sites and all TGs and then just select the TG I want to monitor?

Yep, it's totally doable. You can download PPS and play around with setting it up before you get it. You can program a single TG to a knob position or a group of them.

I prefer to do specific sites and specific talkgroups on knob positions but there's nothing to say you can't dump it all in. Remember, it's really designed to monitor a single site at a time. Not sure how the speed of locking onto sites would be with a ton of control channel frequencies loaded in, maybe others can speak to that.

Latest firmware lets you hold on a talkgroup once you get a activity on it, or avoid talkgroups temporarily with traffic you don't want to hear.

Out of curiousity will you be traveling around the state to monitor the state wide system?
Or will you be monitoring it from a certain area, like your city or county?

I imported the whole system, and set each knob position for a division 1-7, and set the last knob position for all the main channels & tac's works well

early on you can program just the site or sites closest to you for the system.
Then later when you have more time you can program the rest of the sites for when your travelling.

Instead of loading with all kinds of talk-groups and Systems. I took mine on TWO different trips through my State. One North/South thru 12 Counties on the Statewide System. The other like 9-10 Counties East/West. I added all the Control Channels of those Counties only ..didn't mess with alternates since it was just an experiment. I set up the PPS with ONE MONITOR ZONE and only one talk-group *a Wildcard (65535) It worked perfectly on both trips. Monitoring wasn't as hard as you'd think with other groups butting in. Conversations were easy to follow on the G5. That was BEFORE they added the talkgroup (HOLD) button. NOW you can simply add a MONITOR Zone under "RECEIVING MODE" scroll down on the PPS. They added that in recent PPS updates too. These days I have 4 or 5 Counties set up for ones I know I will travel to with the chosen talk-groups added. Also have a VHF zone FOR those counties too that are still being used.
The Unication Pagers are truly a great product. I can't wait to see the Unication SCANNER advertised on the Unication Taiwan site. Should be fun.

i did the entire NJICS system in my G5 before the import feature, took a little bit of time but it works amazing as it just hops site to site while i move around the state, sometimes it does grab onto a site that has a weaker signal than one i know is close so i just change the knob position then go back and try to get it to grab the other site, but works great overall
