I have been unable to figure out how to add Wayne NJ PD & FD frequencies into this radio. It has an APCO 25 card also. Wayne uses APCO 25 Phase 1 with one control channel. What am I doing wrong? I have a BCD436HP portable and had no issues programming it for Wayne. Just can't seem to figure it out at all. Also this is a digital capable scanner but when I program a channel say 161.4075 it jumps to 161.4100 this is a RR channel. The original channel before narrowbanding was 161.400. Any help appreciated.
Wayne uses Harris portables BTW.

Sounds like you have the steps set to auto. Change it manually when programming and it should fix the problem.

As far as the radio rounding up to another frequency, you have to go in the menu and set the step size for that exact channel so that it will take the frequency you're trying to program. I know what you mean because they have the standard 12.5 kHz steps set where railroad frequencies don't use that.

As for programming, my 796D is programmed with military aviation and I've overwritten all my old trunk programming. I kind of forgot exactly what steps you might need to take but you do have to create it as a trunk system, you have to enter all of the frequencies and not just the control channel, and then once it is scanning you can add the different TGIDs just by stopping and adding them in whatever channel/slot you want. It doesn't work anything like the 436 HP or SDS models. It has some strange ways of accomplishing simple tasks but it will work on a Phase 1 TRS once you get it programmed.

You might try to find a copy of free scan and use it to program. That or the UASD Uniden software will work. Oh wait a minute, I don't think the 796D had a UASD program on the Uniden website. I honestly can't remember right now and I'm not where I can check either.

But just as a recap, when programming the TRS, look through the menu and make sure you assign it as a Motorola P25 type 2 TRS, then put the frequencies in, and then when you scan there is some button for putting it into trunk mode on that bank if memory serves me right :) And good luck...

Uniden shows software available for the 796D, on the same page as a link to the manual:

No idea whether the software works well, is free, or there is a cost. I never owned that model.

FreeSCAN does not support the 796D, but ProScan does.

That's right, the 796D came out just a year or so before the 396/996T models did. I never used FreeScan on mine and now I know why :)

I think the previous posters have given you the solution regarding the step size issue.

Regarding the Wayne Township trunked system, I'd change a few things:

1. On the 796D, I don't believe you can use single control channel only for a UHF system like most of the newer model scanners. You'll need to input all the freqs as letarotor suggested.

2. Then you need to input a band plan with the base freq, step and offset channel--see how my system is set up below as an example--yours will most certainly be different. Sometimes that info is included in the RR download, but sometimes it may not be there. I'd suggest checking with someone local--there may be someone in your area that has this info, which would save you lots of time.

3. I'd also check to be certain that you have selected the correct trunking type--you should be using Motorola Type 2 - UHF (also shown in the figure above.) Forget the fact that it's not a Moto system, what matters is that you select the type 2 and the correct band--UHF.

FYI, the software I reference above is Butel ARC250--it's what I bought back in 2003/2004 when I got the scanners, Butel does let you download and try the software before you buy, in case you want to replicate what I've shown you. Another great piece of software is ProScan--it'll program most any Uniden scanner, including the BC796D.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

I have a 796d and use the bearcat software E Scanner that came with the scanner. Has worked great all these years on an apco 25 p1 system.

I have a several years old Uniden HP2 that has terrible audio on the digital channels here in Stanislost County. I'm ready to sell it. How is the audio on the 796d ?

It also has terrible charging capabilities. I've already sent it in for repairs once, and now it's not charging again. I'd like to find an alternative.

Just as a side note, ProScan supports the 796 and is WAY more up to date than that ancient E-Scanner.

I have been very satisfied with the sound quality of the 796d, however it is ancient, circa 2009 (?) It was the first P25 P1 I programmed. And will likely not program again. I have all the control and alternate channels up to date, any TGID I may not have programmed in, will be picked up on a search ID. I use it everyday. When I program a new scanner for someone, it is nice to compare the two, make sure I have included everything someone in my area would want.
