Is this a good scanner? And how* easy is it to program?

A friend wants to sell me his for 60 dallors, and it seems like a good deal to me. But is it outdated? What kind of programming software is available, as i'm not very good with programing them. And, how does it compare to my Radio Shack pro-97?

It doesn't even compare to the PRO-97. The Pro-97 does text tags, receives military air band, and has more memory.

However,

I had a BCT-8 since it came out and it's one of my favorite scanners. The sensitivity was great. It's easy to program. Uniden and Butel both make software for it. If you're looking for programming software, go with Butel's offering. The uniden software is very difficult to manage.

$60 is an awesome deal. You should jump on that. New, I paid $180 for mine! Can't go wrong at ALL for the price.

Bct-8

Just a heads up. Try and avoid the BCT-8 with the "Nascar" logo on the lower left-front of the scanner. These units have experienced many problems and high-repair rates. This *ONLY* applies to the NASCAR radios. The other BCT-8's don't seem to be affected. There was a well known defect with that particular batch of radios. Good luck!

More information? What exactly goes wrong with them? I have a BCT-8 which I've only touched once.

I avoid all scanners with the NASCAR logo! =D

Real men drive straight to the finish, while the other guys drive circles trying to find it.

Well, I had two radios that went bad on me... One guy on here(can't remember his name) received 12 units, and ended up with FOUR bad radios out that same batch. Three other guys reported problems as well... Turns out that a whole batch of these radios(most likely from the same line) had some leaky capacitors and cold solder joints. ALL radios in question were repaired under warranty since the problem tends to show up early on. As I mentioned, it was an issue that was unique only to the BCT-8's with the "NASCAR" logo on them...
