United Airlines at O'Hare recently switched from a Motorola Connect Plus DMR trunked system to a (Hytera?) Tier 3 DMR trunked system United Airlines - ORD (T3) Trunking System, Chicago, Illinois . I believe that I was able to correctly determine the logical channel numbers (LCNs) for each of the three sites I've found there so far as my BCD436 seems to be tracking the system well. All frequencies found in use so far are utilizing color code 0.

There is an problem with the database accepting the 4-digit 476/477 MHz LCNs, so the LCNs for each site are listed in the system notes until that issue gets resolved.

All talkgroups I've seen so far are in the format of 6730xxx. Now to figure out who's using which talkgroup!

Hi, I cannot seem to find this United Tier3 system in my SDS100's database. I'm running the last DB version. What category is it listed under?

Tier 3 systems are hit or miss in the Sentinel database. Have several of them that are missing in other parts of the country.

Your only option is to manually add them to a favorites list.

I would look under the Chicago city airports and then check out the local airports because I was looking at the RR Database. under the ohare airport then look at it

IAH West Site
Last night, 937.6375 showed LCN 8 on an SDS 100
RRDB IAH West Site information had LCN 212 previously logged

Is my 8 an error? Or do they fluctuate?

Tier 3 Systems typically use a bandplan, much like their P25 counterparts. The only problem is (for those of us that are monitoring) that bandplan is not broadcast OTA like the P25 bandplans are. Being there would be one bandplan per site, the LCN's would not change unless the whole site changed. I do see that they are transitioning to their assigned 800MHz frequencies, so the bandplan is not typical (it appears they have two base frequencies, one for 900MHz and one for 800MHz).

Using a base frequency of 935.0 (which is LCN 1) and a 12.5Khz spacing in the Tier 3 frequency calculator (how I determine the bandplan), LCN 8 would be 935.0875, and LCN 212 would be 937.6375.

My guess is your SDS100 had a mis-read.

When I load site 1, for example, it connects:

Can someone chime in as to whether or not this looks legit or am I missing something else. It seems to be complaining about network model, but I cannot find that anywhere. Thx in advance for any help.

In all of your files change the SystemID to L2 (The L is the Network Model), that should clear the errors you're getting when loading your config files (the errors in red in your screenshots). So, for example, your DSDPlus.sites file will look like:

DSDPlus.sites
TIIInonStd,L2,1,"O'Hare Site 1"
TIIInonStd,L2,2,"O'Hare Site 2"
TIIInonStd,L2,3,"O'Hare Site 3"

After you've updated your files, give it a go, and let us know if other errors persist.

I changed everything to L2, but something doesn't seem right with the site number (in bold), as those values came from RR. Perhaps, I am not completely understanding this system's config.

The site numbers on RRDB are incorrect, as it appears that someone used the region numbers, which is not relevant in a Capacity Max system. You're going to have to do some detective work to get the right site IDs, since your config files are not going to work.

I use RTL-SDR's and FMP24, but these instructions should work with any tuner and related program. We will work one site at a time, until all three of them are done.

To work on the first site, launch FMP24 and DSDPlus as you normally would. Put focus on the FMP24 window (the "scope" showing what the tuner is receiving).

Enter the first frequency, in this case 476.3375 and press enter. If you're lucky, you'll hit the control channel or other traffic (the narrow gray bar will highlight a white spike, and there should be a large green peak in the wide section at the middle. Watch the DSDPlus scrolling event window, it will tell you what you're getting.

Here's my tuner locked on a Capacity Max Control Channel (since I'm not in Chicagoland, this is not United's system)

Tuner.png

When I tuned to the control channel, I got the following in my Events window:

EventsNotFound.png
As you can see, my SystemID is H1, and my site number is 54 once it identified the system properly as a Capacity Max (the "MOT" in the status bar).

If your first frequency doesn't give a result, move on to the next in that site (in this case 476.4875), and repeat until you get a network and site coming in. Once you've got the first site determined, update the config files with that site number, and verify that the system populates:

Events.png
Ignore the 10 in the SystemID, that's part of my config files since I have a dozen or so Tier 3 type systems, to give it a unique ID.

You can then repeat the process with the remaining sites. Be sure to capture any neighbors that it shows in the event window, since that's helpful to others if it is submitted as an update to RRDB.

Happy hunting and let us know if you have any further issues.

I have the system in my SDS100 and SDS200 with the information from the database. I had to manually program into the radio. I also have it in my 536Hp and it's tracking perfectly. I'm in Bensenville just west of Ohare so I get everything out of the airport pretty good.

@Wsjones ... thank you!! I changed antennas to a ground plane GMRS antenna and improved my signal reception on UHF-T considerably. I worked thru your tutorial and was able to piece together the UA TIER3 system at O'Hare. Is there a legend or a quick reference guide for the DSD Event Viewer and FMP24 GUI so I can further decipher the activities? I have made great progress. Thanks again.

I really wish there was, but most of what I learned was just figuring it out myself (something I'm good at, since my day job is an engineer). Granted there are bits and pieces, both here in the forums and elsewhere, it's really not that complex.

In your DSDPlus directory, there is a file that ends in .event (or in my case, there's multiple, since I use a dual-SDR setup), everything captured in the Events window is written to the file. On my base setup, I tend to shutdown and archive those logs once a week, while on the mobile rig I archive it every day. This allows me to parse and review them without affecting the running installation.

So, I just jumped into the archives to pull the .event file from my March trip to Los Angeles, and for this example, I'll use the start of discovery for United Airlines two LAX sites:

2024/03/09 14:38:27 Freq=859.087500 DCC=0 RAS L1-12 neighbor: Site L1-11; CC=1

First attempt at connecting - since the system was wrongly labeled in RRDB as a "DMR Tier III Standard" and not a Capacity Max, DSDPlus couldn't align what it was receiving Over the Air to what was in the .frequencies file, as over the air was being received as a Capacity Max (something it doesn't directly write to the event log, so you have to see that in real time in the status bar at the bottom of the Events window).

You'll also notice, the last line, which indicates what neighbors it says are related to Over the Air. In this case, We're receiving Site 12, and the neighbor is Site 11, with the Control Channel on LSN 1 (the "CC=1" at the end) - we'll soon find out that the site and Control Channel are incorrect on the broadcast, that's not a DSDPlus problem, but a Radio Engineer problem. The "Color Code" of 0 is also being received as "DCC=0" and of course what frequency we're tuned to.

More of the same, reloading as I make the appropriate edits to the various config files, you can see I fixed the .frequencies file, followed by the .network file and finally the .sites file, as more data started to populate.

At this point there was no noticable traffic, so I decided to switch over to the second site.

This is being read from the USA.csv file, if you have it updated and configured. Since I was based in Orange County while on my visit, the Latitude/Longitude did not align with where I was near LAX, and thus the license holder is wrong for this entry.

As before, I get the Tier 3 negotiation with a Region.Site formatted response for the site number, before switching to the Capacity Max non-Standard format and matching up with what I have in the Config files. Like before I get a neighbor list, but now I'm actually starting to see live traffic, with the talkgroups labeled as "Group call", the Talkgroup number "TG=" the LSN the voice is on "Ch=", and the duration of the call. If I would of updated the .groups file before these started showing, then the description would appear as well. Likewise it will on occasion (and maybe others will chime in on when it does this) it will show the transmitting Radio's ID "RID="

Looking at the status bar of your screenshot, I can see you are receiving System ID L1, you are on Site 2, with a Color Code of 0, you have 2 neighbors, Sites 1 and 17, and of course it is a Capacity Max system, so there's a lot of data that would be helpful to others. If you'd like me to look at your .event file, I would be more than happy to do so.

What a treasure trove of information!

Based on the .event file, I see that you were primarily picking up Site 2, although you had some success with Site 1, but no luck with Site 17 (the one labeled as "Site 3" in RRDB).

  • System ID is L1, not L2.
  • Sites are 1, 2, and 17.
  • There is one frequency on Site 1 and two on Site 2 that are being used but not in RRDB (so you are probably missing some calls) - I have identified them by calculating the bandplan in use (an advanced discussion we can delve into later) - and note that the frequencies are in the system notes as being "not in use" (well, they are).
  • Site 1 reports sites 2 and 17 as neighbors, while Site 2 reports 1 and 17 as neighbors.
  • Site 2 is VERY active with a lot of traffic.
  • All of the talkgroups and radios begin with the 673 prefix, ("ORD" if looking at a telephone dialpad) a dialplan that I proposed but never implemented for Continental Airlines 15+ years ago when I was a contractor for them in Houston, pre-merger with United)

I then looked at your DSDPlus.frequencies file, and can offer a few suggestions.

  • On a Tier III system, you only need to enter each frequency once, (usually the first entry which should have an odd-numbered LSN), the system automatically recognizes the second entry for that same frequency (the even-numbered LSN). That will reduce your line count by half.
  • You are using the LSN as a Search order, I typically leave those set to 0, as they don't have much effect on trunked systems like this.
Based on the logs, here's an updated and corrected version of the portion of the DSDPlus.frequencies file, including the cleanup, corrections, and addition of 3 new frequencies.

I'll leave it to you to update the other config files. If you would like, I can craft a submission to RRDB using my findings, so this information can be helpful to others (especially those premium subscribers that want to download the automatically generated config files).

I really appreciate your looking thru the data. I'm an IT professional and also a premium subscriber but haven't submitted anything to RRDB before. It would be great if you have the time and desire to submit the findings for others to benefit. There are many systems that need the info crafted for the DSD+ configurations. Meanwhile, I will modify my files and do some more discovery. I have no problem with sharing any and all findings.

I have the system in my SDS100 and SDS200 with the information from the database. I had to manually program into the radio. I also have it in my 536Hp and it's tracking perfectly. I'm in Bensenville just west of Ohare so I get everything out of the airport pretty good.

If it's trunking properly on 2 scanners, why does it need to be changed?

My understanding, from what @ChicagoRadio736 stated above, is that he had to manually program it into his SDS100/SDS200/BCD536HP scanners. Previously I tried programming this system into my SDS100 and it would not track, even if I was sitting next to O'Hare. It would be helpful if @ChicagoRadio736 can share with us his manual programming instructions, as Sentinel does not have any of this info. I feel that analyzing this system with the data acquired via DSD+ and tweaking it (with great help from @Wsjones) is a great way to spread the knowledge.
