I seriously doubt Uniden would release a HP-2 as stated above until they get the bugs worked out of their current model. It would hurt them severely in the scanner market. It would also show that the resources are being utilized for a new product instead of fixing the current product, not a good business decision.

New Math

It's common core math. 1 group of pissed off customers plus 1 substantially unresponsive corporation

I'd modify your math a bit:

1 group of pissed off customers plus 1 substantially unresponsive corporation MINUS 1 536 (returned it) and minus 1 Uniden customer = ZERO.

I've been scanning since the late 60's and have owned (and eventually returned or sold) numerous Unidens over the years. The company has always shifted focus almost immediately from released radios to new radios in the pipeline, and as a result, firmware releases for production models are few and far between.

Man I thought I was really pissed off for this past year with Uniden. Looks like I was not the only one. I think after you people watch this glorified video again you will see why we are all pissed off and see how we all got taken to the cleaners.

Jeff-BillyRay-Mable-Bob-Joe. What a joke. They are not your typical scanner users. They are fill in B list actors trying to find their way into show business. They do not listen to scanners. They were just looking for a paycheck from Uniden to do this video and then say see you later. If you wanted to look for a real scanner user they should of not looked any farther than RR website.

You spoiled my 1 year anniversary. I wasn't planning on watching that video again until Nov 13. Now I have nothing to look forward too.

Uniden stock 12/11/13 443.69 yen 10/10/14 223.00 yen. Coincidence? Not posted to bash. Just noticing the pressure on the stock, which should mean pressure on the divisions.

Hmm..

You may need to open the following links in separate pages in your browser to get the gist of what is going on here..

All of the following information is on the public record and available from various online sources.

https://www.google.com/finance?cid=676546

If you zoom out to the 10 year chart, Uniden Corp in Japan have been struggling (stock price) since 2006 and have been languishing between 200-250 yen (roughly US$2 per share) since the GFC in 2009. This despite the rest of the stock market shooting skywards thanks to central banks and others pumping trillions of dollars into the market.

& not helping matters:

Uniden Corp (6815.T) Key Developments | Reuters.com

And this was an interesting little snippet I found while googling Uniden this morning:

For reference, here are (were) Uniden's Global presences:
Group Operation | Company Information | Uniden

Uniden's Chinese manufacturing and R&D facility, established only 12 years ago to be sold:
Uniden Corp (6815.T) Key Developments | Reuters.com

Seems Uniden Corp are bailing out of China completely, possibly to consolidate all production into its brand new(er) & more subsidy/tax friendly manufacturing facility in Vietnam.

But at the same time, this article popped up at the start of 2013:
Uniden Vietnam Co. cuts down about 700 employees
Then in September 2013, more layoffs:
Uniden Vietnam Co., Ltd. further downsizes manpower

From the article:

"It was caused by the reduction of this year’s purchase orders to only over 300,000 products of all kinds/ month, down up to two thirds compared to 2 years earlier (highest output)."

So, who knows..

Despite what people say about Uniden's huge market power in sectors other than scanners, when you look at the projected net profit figure for 2014 of only US7$million Globally, it's not really that impressive. And any business accountant worth his/her salt will tell you it's all about the ROA (Return On Asset) figure.

Besides scanners I can't think of any other Uniden product I have purchased. I think the last item was a cordless phone but most people have dropped the old hardline and moved over to VOIP or Cell.

This may be the beginning of the end to what was a fine company, IMNSHO.
Seems like this happens to most, if not all, companies at some point...

Company history:
History | Company Information | Uniden

Lots of highlights from a well respected company up until the GFC. Then suddenly...... Nothing!
No more highlights.

Sad really. Uniden were powering along in the 80's and 90's with CB's and cordless phones going gangbusters. Now, it seems they are stuck making the same tired product lineup that fewer of us want.

The radio scanner was probably the only niche product in the Uniden range that had no serious competitors and now it seems, they've managed to stuff that up too.

Interesting read from 2005 regarding industrial problems in China and a small insight into the way things are:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...5Apr26.html?nav=rss_world/asia/eastasia/china

The Shenzhen plant and it's roughly 10,000 employees are all history now.

On a side note, I wonder how those patent lawsuits are going?

Uniden needs this like a hole in the head:

Spherix Announces Litigation Update in Lawsuits Against VTech and Uniden -- TYSONS CORNER, Va., Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

It's hard to see a happy ending to this story for Uniden or for us.

Good info. I for one have lost faith in Uniden Scanner Department and will most likely not be buying another radio from them unless I'm sure it works as advertised. In the past members here have taken the lead when it comes to purchasing new scanners from Uniden. I see any future release being questionable until a thorough review can be accomplished. Even if by chance they release an HP-2, you will not see the initial sales like you have with past models.

Rock & a hard place..

I certainly wish them well too. Uniden brought some fantastic and innovative scanner products to market over the years and it would be a terrible shame for the scanner community if they disappeared.

Hopefully the company learned some tough lessons from the last 12 months. In these days of instant product reviews, social media and global markets, you just can't afford to hype an impending product release and then disappoint when you release an unfinished (and arguably sub-standard) model to market.
WTH were they thinking?

I just wonder at what point can this debacle end?

Does Uniden just keep plodding on with the same MO, drip feeding x36HP owners with sporadic and vague updates hoping that nobody files a class action lawsuit, or do they cut their losses and dump the x36HP entirely in favor of a new model (Hopefully taking design input from it's customers rather than one or two 'know it all' types who think they know what everyone wants in a scanner).

Whatever happens, the damage has been done. This product release was handled atrociously by the company nearly 12 months ago and the hole just keeps getting deeper for them every month, week and day that passes without appropriate solutions being offered.

Do we have a right to be angry and frustrated about this?

Hell yeh!

^^----Agreed. After seeing how their CB devision went downhill within a year, I was HIGHLY skeptical about the 436. I even predicted the failure of these new X36HP scanners BEFORE they were even released after seeing their other products take a huge quality hit in just a years period if time. I think it's post #5

At the end of the day scanner buffs and new comers to the market want to be-able to listen to everything that they wanted in the past. We live in a new world with mostly all departments and trunking systems having either full-encryption or partial encryption to law enforcement. Face it scanner sales will keep going downhill at this point as we keep seeing cities and counties upgrading their conventional systems to a trunked system and keep drinking the Kool-Aid on encryption. You be surprised what kind of sales are lost because of technology and locking out the consumer. Most people will just say screw it, not worth it and not buy the unit from their local Radio Shack store or Internet retailer once they figure out they can't hear anything anymore. This is just not US sales. If you look at world wide sales most other high tech country has either gone to any form of digital modulation that a scanner can't receive or they use full encryption. This just hurt sales and is killing the Uniden Corporation. Nobody buys CB radios anymore. Nobody really buys marine radios except maybe a boater which are few and far between. Nobody has a phone line for a cordless phone anymore. And God who buys two way walkie talkies, not many to keep the corporation doors open.

Unless the company gets really creative at this point then they will run out of options and the doors will eventually shut or get bought out or file Chapter 13 and re-org.

They really flopped this last year and people are really dis-appointed and want answers and Uniden just hides behind the curtain and offers a 10 percent dis-count and over-inflates their prices. I have no good feelings for a company that wants to keep digging in our pockets for more cash for dirty scanner radios that have hardware issues.

All the factors mentioned above, including markedly decreased sales, patent litigation, employee layoffs, encryption everywhere, and Uniden's most recent response (or lack thereof) in coming out with promised features, doesn't look good at all.
I was unaware of the layoff situation until read the last few comments. This may indeed be the beginning (and perhaps farther along) of the end of what has been a fairly solid company.
Who really knows about the dongle issue or why firmware updates have not come out. For all we know, maybe Uniden has not paid the "dongle" people or "firmware updater" engineers, or whatever. There very well may be more to this story than we are being told.
It would not at all surprise me if we don't read next that a well-known Uniden representative on this RRDB has decided to call it quits. Who really knows what is going on there at Uniden. But it doesn't smell good from my vantage point. At this point, even if the Wi-Fi and analyze features show up in the next week or two, I probably have purchased my last Uniden scanner. Hard to have much confidence in them anymore. It's really too bad, but perhaps they are victims of economic times and ever-advancing technology.
As someone posted above, how many of us have bought a Uniden product other than a scanner recently. I certainly have not. I hope all my comments are proven wrong, but it doesn't look good.
