As some of you know, I have been in Tokyo this week working out of our main Headquarters. Just wanted to drop a note to say that I am OK and Uniden HQ is OK, too.

When the magnitude 8.9 hit, we definitely felt it. The building had very strong shaking for about 3 minutes. I was in a meeting on the 6th floor, and several of us took refuge under the heavy conference room table. Fortunately, no damage to the building or anyone inside. This neighborhood looks OK, too (no Tsunami here, no major damage). I do see a few cracked windows in other buildings, but nothing fell.

We had pretty much continuous shaking to some degree for the next 3 hours. Only once more strong enough to take cover.

Watching the reports on the news channels, I see scenes of horrific destruction along the northeastern cost, mostly from the Tsunamis. Several co-workers live in towns affected by the Tsunami, and I know that they are anxious to hear from friends and family members. So far, though, all good news.

My heart goes out to the victims and their friends and families. I have been fortunate...I might be inconvenienced a bit, but nothing to compare to what others are experiencing.

Here is a 30-second video of one of the stronger earthquakes later in the day (I did not have the camera out for the first one, which was much much worse...no way I was going to crawl to the other room to get it). Based on the video time stamp, I think this was during a 6.8 quake (Magnitude 6.8 - NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN) that occurred about 30 minutes after the big one.

And here is an example of the shaking that has continued (with occasional larger shakes) for the past 5 hours.

(Note: If you hit these links early they might not be available...takes an hour or so for vimeo to process them and make them available.)

Glad to hear you and your Uniden family are OK. Best wishes for their friends and relatives in the affected areas.

The reports in the US news media make things sound pretty dire in some parts of Japan. As you note, most of the damage seems to have been caused by the tsunamis. Tsunami warnings have been issued as far east as Hawaii and officials are advising coastal Hawaiians to take immediate action to avoid loss of life and property.

One report I heard from Japan indicated that an oil refinery was burning out of control. That kind of report in the US would cause gasoline prices to spike upwards 20-30 cents. I wonder what the impact will be on Japanese gasoline prices which I suspect are already high by US standards.

Upman, Thank you so much for letting us know you're okay. In case you haven't heard, please be aware that emergencies have been declared at 5 Japan nuclear reactors, and thousands have been evacuated. I don't know your location in relation to these reactors, but please follow the news and stay safe.

Hi UpMan,

I think it would be best for you to leave Japan as soon as possible..the explosion at the nuclear plant is a serious information, who knows what might have gone wrong and how much radiation is around you..
stay safe!

Hope All Is Well With You!

Paul!
I don't know if you are still there at this point but this nuclear plant issue is not getting any better. I hope for all of your sakes there at Uniden HQ and all the people of Japan, that this does not get worse. Our prayers go out to you and everyone there!
