• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

In the past I had the same problem. I ended up having to delete CPS from my Windows 10 PC and reinstalled everything. No clue what kind of magic reason why but after that it started working again. Ultimately I learned to keep a Windows 7 laptop around just for CPS 16. One of the agencies around me has XPR 6500’s that I have to keep up with so that was the best way to avoid the headaches.

I tried everything under the sun but the only thing that worked was reinstalling CPS after totally deleting everything. Save your code plugs to a flash drive before you decide to go nuclear. Hopefully someone has better advice but that is what worked for me.

I was able to reorder a programming cable to be used on the back of the radio, I'm hoping that will be able to solve my issue. If that doesn't work then I will try reinstalling the CPS. From what I heard the programming cable might be the issue so I'm hoping that fixes it.

Maybe. I’ve only programmed from the radio body so that might solve your problem. Hopefully it will. I’m interested to see how it goes for you. Maybe try another computer if you have a spare or a friend who will let you throw on CPS.

If you’re going to buy aftermarket, at least make sure it’s an FTDI. Prolific cables have a known history of not always playing nice with Motorola radios. Bluemax49er is a good place to buy aftermarket cables.

Problem is your USB cable and drivers not or incorrectly installed.
I use genuine FTDI cables and drivers with zero issues.

Just a thought... I just had the same trouble with a new genuine Baofeng cable to program our new Baofeng BF-F8HP radios on my Windows 11.
I've already lost a couple of days on this because of the sparse information that assumes we already know what they do not,
Turns out all these cables have a serial converter computer chip and this one won't work with Windows 10 and up. (Maybe an old design?)
So Amazon can take back the $10 cable and sell me a $15 FTDI USB from Mirkit that should work until I get a new computer.
I guess I should have understood and embraced the one line in the sale description of the radios:
"A PC03 FTDI Programming Cable is Recommended for Easier PC Programming"
