Using Scanner Recorder to Record in MP3 Format

I'm trying to get Scanner Recorder to record in MP3 format instead of WAV files. Has anybody had any luck in doing this? I'm selecting MPEG Layer 3 from the drop-down box and it seems to be recording, but when I try to play back the file in winamp, it won't play. I have no problem in playing back my files in when I record in WAV format.

I'm using Win XP with SP2 and Sound Blaster 5.1 with the latest driver.

Any suggestions?

search for the lame encoder, it should be found on sourceforge somewhere

it is command line based but has lots of options, I schedule a batch file to convert my hourly files each hour which works really well

Thanks for the replies guys. I am aware of MP3 encoding software, but I was trying to get ScanRec to record directly to MP3 format so it will save the step of encoding the wav files afterwards. I guess I will just record in wav and manually use a separate encoder.

I use ScanRec to record, and then the free "ACM Station" to convert to mp3. It's small, installs in seconds, and you just drag and drop the wav files you want to convert. ACM Station provides for various sampling rates, but I just use the default which reduces the file size to about 3.85% of their .wav file size.

They don't mention it online, but it works just fine in Windows XP, not sure about Vista though.

If you can't find it online, I'll upload it to my server.

Not sure if you interested in paying for software or not, but I use Total Recorder. I have it set up to automatically record in three different files each day in mp3 format. It starts a file at 0630, 1430, and 2230. Works great for me.

If it works, I'll pay for it. Thanks for the info. I will check out their website. It sounds like what I'm looking for.:)

It has done everything I need it to do. You can also select which kind of input (line in, media player, etc.) you want to record off of. The scheduling function is what sold me since now I don't have to sit at the house and hit stop, save, and record every 8 hours!

Interesting.

I made a recording of the Thunderbirds at the recent Niagara Air Show. I chose the mp3 encoding option, and the recording goes on for 11:08, with a file size of 1.27MB. It was saved as a .wav file, but I simply changed the extension and it plays fine in everything. Winamp shows MPEG layer 3 attributes for the file. Both that and the file size when considering the audio length seems to suggest it saved as an mp3. I did download this copy of Scanner Recorder a week ago. Perhaps they've since added the capability?

Give me your thoughts: http://rapidshare.com/files/50246920/tbirds.zip.html
