Tonight there was an incident up Little Cottonwood Canyon. I heard the battalion chief mention that they would be using channel 15 since not all of the crews could hit the repeater. I am assuming this is an 800mhz simplex/fireground frequency. I have searched a little on the database but can't see anything for simplex freqs.

Any thoughts?

Jon,

I wondered if it was one of those. I attempted to scan them from my home on the west side and couldn't get any hits. I've found with my 900mhz ham band experimenting that a 3 watt handheld does not carry very far on simplex. I was hoping to get something since they were up pretty high in the canyon. I will have to program those simplex freqs into a bank for future use. Do they ever use the output side of the repeaters pairs for simplex? Which is the output side, the higher freq?

Thanks!

I don't think they did use Ch 15 at the scene in the canyon. I heard them say they would switch to it if they couldn't hit the repeater. There is little chance of hearing them from the canyons unless you are in a direct line adjacent across the valley. This is how SL Co Sheriff and Fire did it in the old VHF days, remote bases at Lark and Kennecott beamed across the valley to cover Big & Little Cottonwood.

The output side of the repeater is the higher freq.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2.1; en-us; Droid Build/FRG83D) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

So were you able to hear the comms between the team at the vehicle and command? I was only able to hear command talking to dispatch. I assumed they had to be using simplex at the site. I will keep an I on those common freqs.

Thanks!

I have figured out the CH15 question. Ch15 is programmed as 852.12500 which is "Utah Rpt 4" Utah 800 Mhz Repeater/Simplex 4. It is programmed as a simplex freq only.

I asked an acquaintance of mine what CH15 on his fire radio says. He told me it is ST RPT/TA 4. I put two and two together. I also confirmed it with CloseCall on my Uniden :) They can use if for a fireground frequency if they cant reach a repeater.

Nice catch! Thanks for the info. I figured it was one of the talkaround freqs but nice to know which one.

It would probably be a good one to keep handy. I believe all of the UFA and suburban city departments have it in their radios. I can't speak for SLCFD though.
