• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Does anybody know for sure, which all of the changes with P25 and narrow band, how does that effect the ability to obtain a license to run a 100W VHF repeater? I would like to install a 100W VHF repeater for both business and personal use, but have been told that the FCC is not granting any licenses to new applicants in that band?

You won't get a business license that allows 'personal use'.

Business licenses are for just that, business. Of course, many business systems have some 'illegal' chit chat on them, but you won't be legally licensed for it.

The way the system works, the FCC isn't who you have to convince. If you can convince the local frequency coordinator for the service you are getting licensed in (or trying) that you have a legitimate need, and can find suitable frequencies, they OK it, and the FCC will very likely license it.

Thanks for the reply! And when i say personal use, thats more or less keeping track of our plow trucks while out on the road... I only said personal use as its more of a cash job and secondary means of income versus its primary use which would be keeping track of trucks while out doing auto repair.

GMRS is for Personal USE ONLY.

Contact a few of the local Radio shops about renting Air-Time, that is the best bet for a business user

Unless someone complains, the FCC won't even know. Yes a lot of things are illegal to do, say, convey, etc., on the radio, MOST people have better things to do than to sit on a specific radio frequency/channel and report everything they hear to the feds. Have some fun and monitor some business band channels and you will see what I mean.

And before someone flames me, I am just stating fact, not personal opinion.

A VHF Business Radio Service repeater is an uphill battle for a small licensee, you would have to present lots of additional supporting documentation to justify such a request to the FCC, including why other available communications services (such as cellular, ESMR, etc.) cannot provide the service you require.
