• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Does anyone out there have a list of who actually uses a VHF smartnet/smartzone system? I've never come across one, and haven't seen any in the database.

Bell Mobility Fleetnet in Ontario, Canada is comprised of 4 individual Smartzone systems.

I don't know.

I would start by taking a look at some of the larger States and see what they are using for their Statewide systems.

South dakota & wyoming, & Idaho come to mind.

South Dakota is a Motorola system, but Wyoming is an APCO P-25 system, not Motorola. Idaho is a 700 MHz P-25 system, didn't see any VHF trunking.

LuiePL asked specifically about Motorola SmartZone or SmartNet...

There are a number of states that have or are int process of installing a VHF
trunking system. The state of Virginia is one. It has a couple of areas of the state
up and working on the new system. They call it STARS. You will get mixed
answers if you talk with state people about how it is working. For the most part
it will provide better service and coverage over what is there now.

However, STARS is P25, not smartnet/zone. It works very well on non-dispatch talkgroups which don't process simultaneous MDT data. PITA for those that do (mostly dispatch).

System IDs 782d, 822f, 8230, 8231, and one more we don't know yet.
Also, Hydro-Quebec, System ID 4e2a; CREST system in Victoria BC (9215).
None of these in the U.S. of course.

OK, I was just wondering because some of the VHF radios I've seen on ebay have smartzone, omni link etc in the flash codes, and I've never really come across any systems, thatnks for the info.

Most VHF trunked non-P25 systems I've seen have been portable trunked systems set up for temporary use by 'those' agencies.... specifically WHCA and USSS...

There is also the SS training center in beltsville,MD which is VHF trunked, they ran a LOT of crypto..
