A large tank terminal in Bayonne is now carrying what appears to be Motorola Vhf HTs. After months of searching the entire VHF band I cannot find them. Talked to a worker carrying the H/H he showed me the radio & behold it has trunking info in the display, Dispatch, ops1, ops2, all-call, 911. When he keyed it up it had the distintive connect tone used on all trunked systems! But it is a VHF radio. Help.

Trunking is allowed on VHF. What made you suspect it was a VHF radio? Look up the name or do a radius search on the FCC data base.

Basically due to the fact that the antennas are VHF. The company is International Matex Tank Terminal Bayonne.(IMTT). They are licenced on a few VHF freqs. but all with no activity. Could they possibly be on a 220 Mhz. trunked system? Are there any trunked 220 Mhz. systems in the No.Jersey/ NYC area?

Found theses:
451.65000000
453.00000000
461.02500000
461.32500000
452.21250000
452.43750000
158.37000000
None indicate trunking. All are repeaters except for 158.37 which is a base.

Thanks Tech792, those UHF freqs. were used up to a couple of months ago. One was the maintenance yard, dock, tanks, etc. but their all quiet now. I fear they are on a 220 Mhz. trunked system, and I believe we cannot monitor that kind of system on a conventional scanner. SCANdal can you enlighten us. I remember awhile ago Amb U Car in Jersey City went to a 220 system and it was impossible to monitor them.

There are businesses who bid on "exclusive use" spectrum in the business band and have set up trunked systems. It's possible that they are leasing talkgroups on these systems. A repeater on a building in Jersey City, downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn or even Newark would cover that area pretty well. You can search the 153 and 159 MHz frequencies if you knew how to spot a trunked system, but it would take time to identify and catalog.

Amb U Car?! I remember when they were on 155.1600 MHz and they were like Mother Juggs and Speed. Why would you want to monitor Joel anyway? LOL!

OK finally found them. They are on 220 Mhz. They are operating on 220.9725 Mhz.! Whats up with that? There is no PLs nor any type of trunking ID sub-fleets. And the strange part is that they are in FM mode, I thought the 220 Mhz. band was all AM?

wow interesting. Good work. I too thought commercial 220 was ACSB.
Nothing suprises me any more. You never know where some one will pop up.

Yes this is very strange. I cannot find any FCC info in my limited searches. I believe they are trunked possibly LTR, but have only heard them on this one channel. There also is a very annoying 1 second key-up every 5 seconds that keeps the scanner locked onto it. I have seen their radios, HT1250s I believe with all the attributes of a trunked radio.
