I'm in East TN....over the mountain from the Avery County area. SDS200 with a discone 30 ft. up. Just for the heck of it analyzed VIPER last night. Out of over 200 sites....had data/activity on : Big Rock,Lincolnton,Little River Lumberton-UNCTV,McFarlan and Pea Landing. Monitored for 2 hours. Not a peep....then turned on ID SEARCH and audio from the following unidentified, according to the database, TG's......15188 (a prison),30571 (encrypted) ,30402,30441 and 47018 (State Trooper checking a rest stop). Any ideas? Thanks!

All of those talkgroups are on TACN in Tennessee. All but one are Washington County. In fact the one you mention as being encrypted shows as encrypted on TACN. The other that is a 'state trooper checking a rest area' is the Tennessee HP district 5 dispatch 1 talkgroup. Frequencies are reused over many areas. What you think is Viper frequency is just the same frequency being used on TACN. It is extremely unlikely you heard Lumberton or Pea landing from TN. They just happen to have the same frequency as something local to you.

Just found that out! Will be deleting above post. And I was excited.....I thought those TGID's looked familiar. A learning process. Thanks!

Hahaha it's all good. If you're not learning, you aren't living. Being on a state border in the mountains I imagine you hear all sorts of hard to identify things. If you end up with any Viper questions ask away. We have some Viper system gurus that frequent the NC subforum. Happy scanning!

Sounds good! Thanks,I appreciate that. I was actually in the Grandfather Mountain area this past week with my SDS100.....amazing how much stuff is on VIPER not encrypted. That was what fueled my search/analyzing. And with my home location I can get Ashe and Avery Counties on conventional. Good to be back in the hobby.

Lincolnton would be questionable too.

If you find a frequency not being reused the higher mountaintops get very good distant reception. You can reliably get a few Palmetto 800 sites from the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock. I’ve received as far as the Harbison site in Columbia, confirmed by hearing Richland and Lexington county TGs. 160 miles or something.
