IFMurphy has stopped using the analog system then you may find them on this site 052 (34) Site Name - Joanna Bald Location - Cherokee County
851.82500 852.07500 852.82500 853.17500a 853.32500c

Known talkgroups so far are listed below. Since Murphy Police, Fire, Electric and Water aren't listed they may be dispatched by the county similar to the way Rowan County does. Several smaller PD's in the county as well as Fire Departments are dispatched by the county.

An example of this would be Rowan Sheriff Dispatch talking to unit 1620 would be a Rowan County Sheriff while unit 2602 would be a Landis, NC PD Unit.. Rowan County Fire dispatches for several paid FD's in smaller towns in the county as well as the various county VFD;s.

The problem with this is if no one has taken time to map out the system so to speak you wouldn't know who's who if the dispatching is done just using numbers. In mapping the Rowan P25 system recently I've discovered several talkgroups which have been submitted to the database and have a few more yet to be verified for those who like to scan more than just Public Safety.

SO I would recommend entering the site info but let your scanner search for talkgroups. You never know what you'll find. And once you verify a new talkgroup dont forget to submit it to the database.

Georgew0819 is correct regarding the Joanna Bald Site, but you also need the Murphy Site for VIPER coverage (Murphy Cherokee 851.08750 851.33750 851.90000 852.20000a 853.83750c 853.91250)

Currently, Cherokee County only uses VIPER for Ambulance to Hospital communications and occasionally when working with a state agency, such as NC DEA airplanes looking for pot fields. SHP Troop G District 6 and Wildlife District 9 use VIPER in Cherokee County on a regular basis. SHP is dispatched from Newton and Wildlife direct from Raleigh. Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) also operates on VIPER and can be monitored when they are in range of either the Joanna Bald or Murphy site.

Cherokee SO moved primary dispatch to their TAC frequency of 159.105 NFM analog last week. They have recently acquired two new VHF narrow band FM pairs from the FCC. The assumption is that they are switching out the old primary repeater to DMR/TRBO on a new frequency pair. I am monitoring all the new frequencies and I will have the database updated once they go live.

All 20 Volunteer Fire Departments and Cherokee County Rescue, Inc operate simulcast on 154.995 and 154.445 with two tone sequential paging to Motorola Minitor pagers. The FD TAC channels are West TAC 155.565 (repeater) and TAC 3 154.220 simplex. EMS is paged and dispatched on 155.160 from a remote base with an input frequency of 155.805 (DCS 606).

The VIPER plan includes a new VIPER site on Payne's Mountain where the west fire repeater is located. Unfortunately, whomever came up with that idea did not realize the west fire repeater is solar powered and camoflauged on private property with a long term lease. The owner of that property wants too much money from the state to erect a VIPER tower. The same was true for the Murphy site, which was supposed to be erected on Fain Mountain with the other county radio equipment, but it is also private property with a landlord that wanted $15,000 per month from the state for a VIPER tower. So, the Murphy site is located at the CCSO HQ on Regal Street on a 200 foot tower.

Murphy PD remains on 156.2125 and is dispatched during weekday standard business hours from their station in Murphy. They are dispatched by the SO ECC during nights and weekends on the primary SO frequency. Andrews PD is dispatched full time by the SO.

I do not expect to see VIPER used for police/sheriff/fire use here in Cherokee County for a long time. The radios are far too expensive for a poor county like ours, especially since they just replaced all the Sheriff's Office radios to VHF Motorola DMR radios last year.

Actually I now wonder why I have not thought about this before....
Using the Uniden BCD436HP analyze feature I have found the following from
my work location in Northeast Durham:
VIPER Camden Ave Durham Site (1-9): NAC 1F2.
VIPER Cole Mill Rd Durham Site (1-15): NAC 1F0
VIPER Duke Site (1-17): NAC 1F0

Those cover the 3 sites I can receive here from my location.

The VIPER sites in Cherokee County are still Smartzone II P25 digitial trunking with a control channel. I have a Home Patrol 1. All I had to do was program in the frequencies for each site and the scanner did the rest. I have no idea on a time table for the Western Branch to switch to full 9600 baud P25.

Kevin -
EVERY site on VIPER is now 9600bd/P25 since late June of last year. All of the Type II equipment is forever gone now. It may just be that your HP1 is picking the correct CC/system type and carrying on without a hiccup.

Marshal,

How did you get to the analyze function on the 436HP? Mine says "not available"
Need to update that firmware brother! :)
Use Sentinel to update your scanner firmware as the Analyze feature set has been out for a couple weeks.

Just wondered if the Mebane site has transitioned to 700 MHz also? Pro96com is showing 770.29375 as Current control channel. Can't receive it from here.

I believe you're correct. I haven't been able to pick up on the original frequencies for a while, tried the frequency you posted and got site 34 to pop up. I don't have great reception for that site so can't confirm.

Show 43513 as Surry Sheriff CID (Criminal Investigative Divistion) 1.
I have updated the database.
