I noticed the SDS200 has volume adjustments (-3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3) available for each channel or talkgroup. Or, you can globally set this in the software, where all can be set at once. My understanding of the feature is that it gives us the ability to either increase or decrease the volume on each channel or TG and “balance the audio output, eliminating the need to continuously increase or decrease the volume of weaker or stronger audio signals. I gave the global setting a try after I had turned the volume down to a position on the knob where audio stopped being passed to the speaker and noticed I still had room to further reduce the volume before the on/off function was reached. Thinking if I globally set the volume to +3 I could gain additional volume control, I tried it. And it worked for the trunked systems but not the conventional systems. It’s just an observation on my part but thought it worthy of mention. Has anyone got some insight on this? I do not consider this a ”bug report”... it’s just the nature of the beast... most probably caused by the software defined radio.

Setting global volume <>0 gives you less volume range. Max volume is 29, if you set global volume offset +3, you now reach max volume at setting 26, and settings 26-29 are now identical. And you can't set volume below 3 any more, volume 0-3 are identical. It's pointless. Save volume offset for individual channels, but the same caveats apply if you set a single channel +3.

I've been using this feature on both x36hp and SDS series of scanners. I like a nice crisp sound on both analog and digital systems that are some times higher or lower than the rest of the systems.

Not sure I understand all but accepted the range gets reduced. My intended usage of the feature is to balance the volume on individual channels and not use the global setting. I only tried it to see if I could acquire the full range of adjust on the volume control. I believe you tried to explain why I did not see this on the conventional channels but was able to on the trunked TG’s. Which raises the question why on trunked but not on conventional? ...not that it matters. As I stated, I believe there isn't anything wrong with the scanner, it’s just the way it works. And as I am not going to use the global setting, I’m good with it going forward.
(I wondered why, if the feature was designed to equalize the volumes of differing channels or TG’s, they included the ability to set globally all to the same value?)

It’s in Sentenel
This is the only place I see it mentioned

Sentinel Software Manual Volume Offset
Volume control knob? Volume Offest is needed if you have systems that require a higher or lower volume then the one you set.
The Volume offset that you see in Sentinel can be set individually on talkgroups or conventional frequencies, if that channel or TGID is significantly louder, or softer than other channels and talkgroups.

There is a Volume setting in Sentinel, in the Profile.
81758
That's on the miscellaneous tab of the profile, and simply sets the default volume when the scanner boots. It's not a minimum, nor a maximum. Just a default for when the scanner boots.

The other Volume setting is on the Close Call tab of the profile, where you can set the volume level of the alert tone that sounds when and if a Close Call hit is found. That can restrict the volume, but only for Close Call alerts.

I will get back to you when I am in front of the computer. (Currently not at home.) I am not talking about either of the two settings mentioned here (the default volume setting or the close call tone volume setting). I believe it’s a global setting. I turned it on in my sentenel program and then re-loaded my FL’s to the scanner. Next was the verification process where I randomly checked a number of both conventional and trunked system settings. All were set to +3 volume offset. I haven’t returned the scanner to factory default as yet but intend to do so shortly. Thanks for the graphic that shows the (adjustable) default volume setting the radio uses when first turned on... I miss that one! Expect my findings by 9AM this morning.

Any chance you can elaborate. I have never seen it in sentinel.

Here is what I found on how to globally set the volume offset using Sentenel software... there isn’t a global setting. I mistakenly confused Sentenel with Butel’s ARC536PRO.

In ARC536PRO I clicked on Options. Then chose Bulk Channel Edit. In Bulk Channel Edit you have two options, Conv. Frequencies and TalkGroups. Below that there is a heading “Select Systems”. I chose “All Systems”. And below that there are options for a bunch of things, “Volume Offset” being one of them. I loaded the scanner with my FL’s twice, one for Conv. Frequencies and again with TalkGroups.

Sorry for the confusion. My bad.

Doing a volume offset on every channel is a bad idea because you can't change the minimum or maximum volume with it. Only use it on channels that deviate significantly from the average.

You can perform a similar task in Sentinel...highlight one of the preferred Volume Offset settings, right click Copy. Left click and drag or highlight those you want to have that Volume Offset, right click Paste and the selected values will be applied. File..Save...Write to Scanner.
