The only radios that I know that include a roger tone are CB/ 10 meters radios. You would have to buy or build a circuit that would create a tone when you unkey your radio. Some repeaters don't allow roger tones because the courtesy tone and time out timers are reset with them and it causes confusion for end users.

Then he's going to have to get a commercial radio that has a MDC1200 board in it. He's still going to p-o the repeater owner:)

But, really, a roger beep on 2m????

You could probably get it to work, but I doubt if any Ham operator would want to talk to you after he heard the 'beeeep'.:)

I don't even like the repeater courtesy tone, but every one of my computers are muted too. Most hams will complain if you have the internet connection feature on(atom symbol on button) because it emits a tone when you press the ptt

This is very true as we have local people who tend to do this.

If you are referring to the double beep that Motorola and other radios on trunked systems make when you key up, that is only heard by the user keying the radio. The purpose of that double beep is to tell the user that they have an open voice channel on the system. The alternative to that double beep is a single "bonk" sound which tells the user they don't have a voice channel. Neither of these sounds go out over the air.

Do a search here on site to see what uses MDC1200 has. It is an analog version (in simple terms) of what a radio ID does on a digita/analog trunked system. Not needed in the ham world. That is why we have call signs.

As was abundantly stated above in several posts, hams don't need or use extraneous gimmicks such as "roger beeps." In commercial comms such data bursts are used to automatically identify a radio making a transmission, but the only thing you will accomplish on the ham bands by using such things are the lasting dislike of you by your local fellow hams.

To actually answer the OP's question... The Wouxun KG-UV2D/KG-UVD1P series dual band handhelds, available on ebay/wouxun.us/elsewhere, have a roger tone feature (because of their commercial background).

That said, I agree that it is generally not necessary or appreciated for ham use. I think for commercial operations, it is common that people have their radio strapped on, but aren't actively listening - if they need to bust in with a quick transmission, the beep helps confirm to them that the transmission is over. Hams are usually paying attention at the time they want to make a transmission.

If a repeater operator wants to implement something due to the time the repeater takes to quiet or unkey, they can do that at their discretion - the radio operators don't need to individually implement it.

I have a couple of Wouxun handhelds and wondered about the Roger Tones myself. I'm newly licensed and would not want to offend or irritate anyone on the local repeaters.

Thanks for the input on this subject, I'll make sure to keep these Roger Tones off.

Thanks again VA7AEJ

Obviously the OP is new to Ham radio along with a few others. Its real simple, these rogger beeps are generally frowned upon by most operators and you won't make many friends on the air if you are transmitting them each time you key up. That's just the way it is, welcome to Ham radio. Roger beeps and those silly tones the wouxuns's make should be tuned off.

Regarding MDC bursts like you hear from commercial radios that police and fire presonel generally use, they're certain repeater groups that are hard core commercial radio users and they will welcome the use of MDC but not other stuff like you mentioned.

LOLing quietly behind the scenes I'm reminded of a certain highly respected administrator here who received howls of protest when he inadvertently left the MODAT on and one called him a #^*)@#$ CBer. No lasting dislike though, just thanks for turning it off.

Someone mentioned a dislike of repeater courtesy tones, I prefer the occasional repeater without that annoying tail and doesn't need a tone. PS repeaters are like that and they get by so why oh why can't I? (Sorry Judy Garland for stealing your line.)
