I use MURS on HT1000s. The radios are tough as nails (can pound nails with them and keep on talkin') and MURS is VHF. I tend to like the properties of VHF better than UHF for my purposes. Will probably run you ~$200 - $250 for a set if you find a good deal on eBay, so they aren't cheap. The advantage is if you ever want to get into amateur radio, or monitor other things on VHF, you can.
If you are lucky enough to find one, I'd say the HT1000's bigger brother, the JT1000 is the best radio for outdoor use. Especially if you get the FPP intrinsically safe one. These tend to be at least twice as expensive though.
One thing to be aware of though is these things are built like TANKS. And like tanks, they are HEAVY for a two-way radio.
They are dead simple to use though. Turn one knob to turn them on/adjust the volume, turn the other to set them to the same channel. Push the big button on the side to talk. Pretty idiot proof.
Just depends on how serious your communications needs are. The HT1000/JT1000 used to be the de facto standard for serious commercial/public safety communications.
