One person dies in fiery crash southwest of Kersey on Monday night

Jakob Rodgers
January 15, 2008

One person died in a fiery crash Monday night, the first fatality of the year on Weld County roads.

At about 10 p.m., a 1987 Ford Bronco that was traveling north on Weld County Road 49 it hit the trailer of a semi that was traveling eastbound on Weld 44 and hauling dry concrete. The driver of the Bronco died, and the person's name has not been released.

The driver of the semi was uninjured in the crash. However, the man, whose name was also unavailable, was taken to North Colorado Medical Center, 1801 16th St. in Greeley, about 40 minutes after the crash in an ambulance after complaining to officers of chest pains while filling out the witness report.

Sergeant Dennis Schenkenberger of the Colorado State Patrol said the man was being transported for a possible heart attack or other heart ailment, but he was unable elaborate.

According Schenkenberger, an officer from the Lochbuie Police Department was the first to arrive on the scene. Schenkenberger said that when the officer arrived, the person in the Bronco was unconscious but appeared to be gasping for air. The vehicle then burst into flames and efforts to put out the blaze with the officer's one-pound fire extinguisher was unsuccessful.

It is unknown if drugs, alcohol or the speed of the vehicles played a factor in the crash. Before being taken to the hospital, the driver of the semi said he stopped at the stop sign while traveling east on Weld 44. Traffic on Weld 49 does not have a stop sign.

This is the first fatal crash on Weld County roads this year compared to one the same time last year.
