What agency can you pick up out west and what agency you can't pick up.

I believe Regina police,Saskatoon police,RCMP,Calgary police,Vancouver police you cannot pick them up.

What about Surrey and Richmond?

Erm, it all depends what you're looking to listen to..

Shall I presume you mean police since that's all you mention?

Calgary city police are monitorable by digital scanner. Edmonton are, but only main district channels. Lethbridge is not, as far as I know, and neither is Medicine Hat. RCMP in Alberta are, for now.

For other agencies besides police, give me a hint what you are looking for.

Jay is correct. There are six talkgroups for EPS that can be picked up, one of which is rarely used (mainly for large load escorts through the city at night), and then the five analog basic dispatch channels. There are 43+ digital Edmonton police talkgroups I think at last count, not including backups and simplex. Yes, most of the interesting action seems to happen on the mobile workstations and the digital groups.

Those are the cities where we cannot hear the police due to provoice.

Better yet...

What is provoice.

Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District, West Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster, Surrey, Langley City, Langley Township, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Delta, White Rock, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Belcarra, Anmore.

And all of the police in thhose cities are encrypted ?

Yes, most of the interesting action seems to happen on the mobile workstations and the digital groups.

So it looks like the Edmonton police like to use the workstations to dispatch the calls than the radio? And only the dispatch channels can be picked up?

Well only picking up 6 talkgroups out of 43+

Calgary city police are monitorable by digital scanner

Every thing even on NON disptach talkgroups?

Correct, in Edmonton most info on a dispatched call is sent to cars via their mobile workstations and not voiced. And the other 40+ groups are digital and can not be monitored with a scanner. Scanner users are stuck listening to the five analog dispatch groups, for basic call info, and exciting things like parking bylaw enforcement officers booking off and on for dinner.

Provoice is a digital mode used on EDACS systems, and can not be monitored with a scanner.

So the lists should look like this.

You can pick up.
Calgary police
Edmonton police ( only the dispatched talkgroups)
R.C.M.P

You cannot pick up.
Regina police
Saskatoon police
Vancouver police
Surrey and Richmond police

Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District, West Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster, Surrey, Langley City, Langley Township, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Delta, White Rock, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Belcarra, Anmore.

Cannot pick up police.

Yes. The RPS is using DES encryption in ALL their comms, including dispatch. There are backup analog TG's they can use in case of a failures or upgrades to the system. Here is a list of all the TG's on the the City of Regina TRS.

Absolutely! Regina has the highest murder rate of any city between 200 and 500 thousand people. In all other crimes, we are always in the top 3. Here is a link to the latest crime stats by Statistics Canada.

Is this statement or a question? Either way I'm not sure what your trying to say or ask.

There were probably many reasons why the RPS encrypted their comms, the best reason I think was to improve police safety. It doesn't matter where you live, there is and always will be "undesirables" listening in on police. Obviously it did nothing to curb crime, but I believe it protects police working the streets.

I used to live there... and its because there is actually nothing to do

I almost fell off my chair reading this. I don't think murders, robberies, rapes, or B&E's happen because of boredom. If nothing to do is the reason why there is so much crime in Regina, then smaller centres like Lethbridge, Red Deer, and Estevan should have crime rates (per capata) much higher than Regina, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. But they don't.

The reason why there is so much crime in Regina (or anywhere really) is because of poverty, drug and/or alcohol abuse, gangs, and other social ills stemming from these reasons. These are crucial factors that need to be brought under control before we see any kind of decline, right now all of these factors are out of control. That is why Regina has a very high crime rate.

Richster.

I would suggest reading the radioreference db for every city you are interested in to get a better idea of what you can and cannot hear. The Lower mainland WARS section in the BC Trunking DB will explain what is digital and non-digital.

Cheers,
