I'm new to RR, a novice when it comes to scanning, and thinking about updating my Pro-2052 scanner so I've been trying to educate myself regarding the HP-1.

When looking at the MPSCS database for Iosco County via Home Patrol Sentinel, I see two channels for Oscoda police. One says, "Oscoda Police" (TGID 1494) and the other says, "Oscoda Police - Proprietary" (TGID 4080). What does "proprietary" mean in this case? I'm assuming that both channels are monitorable since they have TGIDs...is that right? Sorry if this is a silly question but I've searched the Wiki and the forums here and haven't been able to find an answer.

I cant say for sure, but I would guess it means it is an encrypted channel, with a proprietary encryption type, that is not openly available, and able to be recieved without a radio that supports that encryption. Maybe someone who knows more can clarify/correct me here?

Proprietary means confidentially owned and controlled. Thus it is a reference to something that is exclusively owned by someone, often with implications that it is private and cannot be used by other parties without negotiations. It is often used as the word opposite to open. Thus this word indicates sole and private ownership to the exclusion of all other parties.

It can be used in reference to several things like literary works, property, computer software and other things. Intellectual property like copyright and patents are also included in the term proprietary. The party owning things that are proprietary in nature is known as a proprietor. This word originates from the Latin term proprietarius. Proprietary things are protected with the help of trademark or patent or copyright and an agreement or documents in the case of land or property.

It does not show in rr database those channels are encrypted. The most likely one to be encrypted would be TG 1170 35drug

The two you mention could be a LEIN channel and one a Car to Car

If you program them in you would be able to tell if their encrypted. It will sound like garbled audio that makes no sense.

In the case of the MPSCS, a "proprietary" talkgroup is a talkgroup that is programmed in that agency's radios only. No other agency will have that talkgroup programmed into their radios.

In most cases, these talkgroups are in the clear, although some may be encrypted.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to hear that "proprietary" does not necessarily mean "encrypted". I'm not sure I would be able to monitor the Oscoda Police anyway, but I currently pick up some stuff from Iosco Co with my 2052 so there is a chance that I could monitor them with the right kind of digital radio.
