I just installed my Unitrunker software today, and it works great. I am just wondering what it means when it says that a radio "joins" a group, as opposed to a "call"?

It seems to happen at random times

ie. the DA Investigators base "joining" the DA investigators talkgroup at 2200 hrs, five hours after all of the DA investigators have left for the night.

Thanks for the help.

That means the radio is now monitoring the talkgroup. This happens when the radio is powered on or when the user turns the channel knob.

As Rick (Unitrunker) says, this happens when a radio is either first turned on, or when the channel knob/key is used to select a new channel. The radio sends a message to the trunk system computer saying "I'm here". It's also known as "affiliation".

Someone has physically touched that radio and turned it on/changed to that channel. There are rare occurrences where this may happen without human intervention - like, if someone unplugs a base/mobile radio and plugs it back in, it might power itself on when it gets plugged back in again. But usually, this is because someone is at the controls.

Am I wrong in thinking that 'join' also could occur when a radio moves in and out of a certain site's range, thereby affiliating with a strongest signal site (all other permissions being equal).
