What happens if you fail the test? Do they let you retake it again on the same day or at a another time?

It usually depends on how much you fail it by. However, most of the times if you fail the technician test you are done for the day and must take it at a later time.

If you miss by a little, 2 or 3 questions, we would encourage you to try again. If you're way off we would encourage you to study some more and try again later. We wouldn't STOP you from trying again, though, no matter how bad you did. Of course, each retest is another test fee, if I remember right.

what happens if you fail the first test you take? That depends on several things ranging from how busy the VE's are, to how patient those VE's are. I can only speak for the testing that I'm a part of, others have different constraints. Re-testing immediately isn't uncommon at all, it's done quite often. Another aspect is how many different tests for each license class those VE's have available. If you re-test through every one of those test so that another try means using the same test again, we won't do that, you'll have to come back later. (Most VE's have something like three different tests for each class of license, as an example.)
It's also a fairly common thing to not charge for each and every test taken.
The whole process isn't as "cut-n-dried" as it seems sometimes, there are allowable variations. You won't be -given- a passing score unless you earned it (know the required knowledge).
I don't intend to make the VE group I'm a part of sound like we can be 'bought' or influenced by sympathy, we can't. Absolute best advice is to be prepared, just like them Boy Scouts, you know? But 'stuff' happens, and we'll go along with trying again if possible. (We'll even stop telling lies, bragging, and all that 'normal' behavior if the noise bothers you... :))

I know a few hams who missed a few when they first took their test, but it never stopped them. They just retook it until they passed.
Out of the VE's I've talked to,Most would rather a student retake it, instead of fail them.
Personally, failing is not an option to me. :)

OK I'll tell you what happens. IF you fail, they tie you down and each VE takes a bat and beats you butt black and blue. [only joking]

Fail 3 times and the self-appointed Radio Police will storm your house and forcefully take all your neat radio toys. The Radio Police have a special RR Branch that actively monitosr all postings for non-compliance. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Which reminds me are the bruises gone yet? I know you've needed that pillow for a long time.

The Radio Police are everywhere they usually drive around in old CVPI's with numerous antennas and sometimes even emergency lights, just in case someone posts a question about enabling out-of-band transmit they can be there in a flash. If you doubt their existance just look for that CVPI parked at your local fast food place on a Saturday night so they can monitor the wirless headsets and the closest Hot Box detector.

When I took my Extra I missed it by one (1), I figured something was up -- I even has said as much when they where grading it, that I had missed it by one -- when they all where talking very quietly to each other. They came and told me that I had missed it by one, and they where willing to let me take it again it I wanted too (they also kind of encouraged it). So I took it again, and passed it by two. Granted, I could have perhaps used another month of study, but I was starting to get burned out.

But it is a lot what the others have said, it depends on the VE's, and by how much you failed it. When I took my Tech test, one guy for some reason got all the answers on off, and they let him retake the test.

They point and laugh.... yes you can try again the same night atleast that is what they said when i went for the test...the VE's at my test were not letting anyone leave untill they passed!!! they even let me take the general test as soon as i passed the tech..same nite..

From what I have seen that is not too uncommon. If you pass the Tech, they will ask you if you want to take the General (since it will be free), and if you pass that one, you can try for the Extra -- all three in one night. Believe it or not, there are some people who can -- and have -- pass all three in one night.

 I really don't see why you would fail the test in the first place. Questions and Answers are available online and in the study guide

Oh, I don't think it's too difficult to fail a test, there are all kinds of reasons for that. Lack of knowledge is one of them, but so is having one of "those" days, or just 'blanking' on it. I know I've done that 'blanking' thingy and I really did know the information wanted. I wish I knew the reasons for that happening, I could make a fortune!
