what happens if you fail the first test you take? That depends on several things ranging from how busy the VE's are, to how patient those VE's are. I can only speak for the testing that I'm a part of, others have different constraints. Re-testing immediately isn't uncommon at all, it's done quite often. Another aspect is how many different tests for each license class those VE's have available. If you re-test through every one of those test so that another try means using the same test again, we won't do that, you'll have to come back later. (Most VE's have something like three different tests for each class of license, as an example.)
It's also a fairly common thing to not charge for each and every test taken.
The whole process isn't as "cut-n-dried" as it seems sometimes, there are allowable variations. You won't be -given- a passing score unless you earned it (know the required knowledge).
I don't intend to make the VE group I'm a part of sound like we can be 'bought' or influenced by sympathy, we can't. Absolute best advice is to be prepared, just like them Boy Scouts, you know? But 'stuff' happens, and we'll go along with trying again if possible. (We'll even stop telling lies, bragging, and all that 'normal' behavior if the noise bothers you...
