Are there any comparable models to the 106 that I can also search for used?
The Pro-106 was manufactured by GRE, for Radio Shack. GRE sold the same scanner, under their own name, as the PSR-500. Both of these models are getting scarce, as GRE shut down production last fall (see this
thread). The only difference between the
Pro-106 and
PSR-500 is the front panel layout (speaker & display location). These are both handhelds (portables). If you were looking more for a base/mobile type scanner, the equivalents are the
Pro-197 and
PSR-600 respectively. The operation, programming, capabilities, etc, of all four of these scanners are the same. As has already been noted by other members, there
are deals to be had, if you keep your options open and check the various sites regularly for good condition pre-owned units at an attractive price. What actual 'new in box' stock remains at dealers is rapidly diminishing in quantity, while (in most cases) the asking price has escalated.
