Data.....

It s defintley data!!!!!!
Not sure what kind.
Not FAx because fax soundS different.
I don' think its a modem either
at least not your typical consumer 56k etc Modem..
Yeah what frequency range?
Check the Allocation charts that would narrow it down...
As every frequency here in the States are allocated/assigned by range
and then of course by license
I assume it's in the HF range.....
As this is the HF Forum.....

Now, to decode it, get one of the software programs to hook it to your computer and its sound card. I presently use MixW2 and the BuxCom interface to one of my Kenwoods or IC 718. Very good!

thanks for the replies guys! it was on 8670

That would be in the 8 MHz marine band. It is probably a coast station someplace although it is possible it could be a non-marine station. Chances are if it isn't a weather broadcast its probably encrypted.

Hi all,

It's FSK alright but not RTTY. I'm not about going through all the permutations trying to decode it but I'll say it looks like TOR on the display, possibly AMTOR or SITOR. Then again God only knows the receiver settings when it was recorded, one thing I can tell you is the display revealed the tones are wrong which is why I'm not going through the trouble of shifting them so they can be decoded. Next time make sure you're on frequency before sending us a useless sound file, please?

What characteristics does your display show to indicate the signal is TOR? - Regards

Geez, I'd hate to be a newbie...

A lot of folks don't know how to tune FSK properly, and if he hasn't heard RTTY/SITOR before then he'd have no idea what it "should" sound like.

He wanted to know roughly what it was, not a detailed analysis.

I would like to backup for a moment.

Napalm, what device or testing equipment did you use?

Ok, lets agree its frequency shift keying between 2k and 3k (audio). I'm looking for evidence that it was TOR as Napalm says it is.
