I'm using my RSP1a with SDR Console and SDR#, and I'm getting this problem where the sound is garbled and terrible when tuned to the exact freq (in AM mode). However, if I detune a few khz, it becomes clear. I was told this was because there is a DC spike when running in zero IF mode, BUT I'm in low IF mode. What the heck is going on?? Now, if I switch to N-FM, the sound is normal. Any ideas here? I'm about to pull my hair out. See video below:

Also, here's another thing: WHY do I have these spikes all throughout the spectrum??

User error.

NOAA signals are FM.

You were listening to an FM signal with the SDR software in AM mode. Notice how it cleared up when you selected the right modulation?

Noaa weather radio is vhf fm, bandwidth of 12500 should work. I tried my rsp1a with other software, don't like the way it preforms with them, but I bought it with full intention of using sdruno, where it performs fantastically. Airspy's work great with sdr# and sdr console

Ah, OK, I guess that explains it! :) I did go back to AM, and did some tests with zero IF vs low IF, and it does seem to behave like I read. With zero IF, the signal sounds like junk when tuned exactly. When I flip to low IF, it clears up (since the DC spike is gone). Now I can chill....thanks!

...and RTL-SDRblog dongles! You know the old saying, "You only get what you pay for." Well, for a cheap little $40.00 kit with a rinky dink antenna, combined with the Airspy software is a remarkable thing... at least on VHF. The software can silence the background static and leave a great sounding result. In fact that thing on the local weather frequency below out performs my SDS100 or Sangean CL-100!
