• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I will be installing a 50 watt GMRS mobile radio on a side-by-side. The antenna is a Midland 6db unit. I plan to use RG-8X for a 10' run. Been reading about the importance of using quality coax and to beware of some of the Chinese crap that will rob power from the radio.

What retailers to you guys use to insure that you are getting quality coax and connectors? I've gone to a few online retailers but I haven't been in the hobby that long and stiil am not aware of who sells quality products and who doesn't.

Thanks

if I get to the point of neededing extra coax I’d recommend them: Home | RF Connection

Find the coax ajd connectors you need then order. They may ask for an amateur call sign. But just give them your GMRS call sign or tell them you don’t have one. I’ve had a custom made jumper to go from my LMR 400 to mymultiple transmitters (I swap the antenna around frequently). I’ve also bought connectors only. Customer service has always been really good.

It's a lot easier than you are making it.

NMO mounts can be purchased with and without coax. It's much easier to buy one with the coaxial cable you want already installed. You can always "roll your own" if you want, but there's really no benefit, unless you just want the challenge.

It's your install, you do it the way you want. The fraction of a Decibel difference you'd see by using RG-8X over standard RG-58 is so small neither you or your radio is going to know the difference. Seriously, I run an 800MHz system at work, and even for that, I run RG-58 in the mobile installs.

A standard Larsen NMO mount with RG-58 and the suitable connector for your radio will work just fine:

If you want to get fancy, LMR-200:
But no way I'd pay $60 for that, it's not worth it unless you are running really high frequency stuff (think 5.8GHz WiFi)

The more important part about these two mounts is the way the coax enters the bottom of the mount.
Since UTV's/Side by Sides can get exposed to a lot of mud, rain, snow, water, and dust, you want to make sure the underside of the antenna mount is well sealed. Anywhere the underside is exposed, I always use these mounts. To make them even better, slide some marine grade heat shrink tubing over the cable where it enters the mount.

I also use RF connection, but for custom made cables. So if in the house I need a 21’ run of coax with a mini UHF connector on one end, & a N connector on the other end, they’re the guys I call. Got a bad one once, & they immediately replaced it for free.
