Works on yellow battery tray charged AA batteries only

Try a different set of batteries in the black holder. Batteries may be dead. You can try the rechargeable batteries in the black holder.

If it was me, I would use my volt meter to see if any voltage is being output by the adapter.
Try another outlet on a different circuit as it maybe the problem or if the plug has in the circuit a GFI that tripped - might be with power failures?
Other would be its fairly common wires become frayed especially just below where it enters the ac adapter.

Losing power can have detrimental effects at times to electronics.

They are pretty inexpensive on ebay ws1040 dc adapter | eBay

These also I can personally attest work too pqlv203 | eBay
