I have a Whistler 1040 to listen to my local police, fire, ems, etc. It has Ben a good radio until the last few weeks. ALL of a sudden I am not hearing anything or maybe one transmissions every hour or so. I live in a small county (DavieCounty, NC) but we still have a lot of chatter.

I updated my system maybea month ago. I am not sure if maybe I messed something up. I am still a novice when it comes to scanning or understanding the programming.

Anyone with some suggestions? Considering a new scanner but this one was doing fine until recently.

Need more info on where you are and what agencies you listen to. Do you use an external antenna on the handheld? Can you hear local NOAA weather channel?

What programming software are you using? If you have ARC500 or Win500, please attach your programming file and I will check it for problems.

Have you checked to see if the control channels on VIPER have changed? According to the database Davie County is using Viper. Outside of that, as @danesgs said, we need more info on what you are listening to.

Thanks for all of the help. I am using PSR Edit. I am listening to EMS, Fire, Sheriff. I live in Mocksville which is in Davie County, NC. I am using the basic anntena that came with the device. I live in the rural part of the county. Yes I can hear the weather.

This morning for whatever reason Davie EMS and Fire is now coming through. Listening right now the Davie County Tac 2 is not coming through well. It breaks up quite a bit. That may be a reception error. However the dispatch comes through low and scratchy but easily understood. Still unable to hear the sheriff/police. Maybe VIPER has changed since I did my last update.

I will try updating my file and see if that helps too.

Okay. So looking at what frequencies are currently coming through and the sites of where the frequencies appear to originate from it looks like the frequency coming from one is the Mocksville site which comes in clear (VIPER) and then one from Sheffield (VIPER) is not clear. It is strange that Sheffield is much closer to my home then Mocksville site.

If you stationary just program the control channels for the Viper site you are close to and no other ones. If your scanner has other sites control frequencies in it and it losses the current one it could lock onto a distance site. Also you should set your scanner to Stat under the muti site setting.

Also need to check on any updates on the system you are monitoring.

Thank you very much! Will try that.
