• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Who assigns Talk Groups?

We have two unrelated Motorola Type II systems in my area. One is Public Safety, and the other General Business. I don't think there is any duplication of TGID's between these two but it got me curious.

Who assigns the TGID's to a system? Is each TGID used in only one System or can the same one be assigned to two or more systems that are in different regions?

In general, every system is an independent, freestanding entity. Talk Group ID's are assigned by the system's radio system administrator. There is generally no coordination of TGID's between different systems (nor is there generally any need for such coordination).

That said, there are some neighboring systems that do coordinate TGID's (for example, Tarrant County has two systems and each can be used as the backup for the other, so in that case TGID's are coordinated but I believe both systems are administered by the same group) but that is likely more the exception than the rule.

Thanks, that makes sense. :D

The same talkgroup could be assigned to many systems within a given region. Let says you have a talkgroup of '48' in use on 3 systems in the same area. The radio will only listen to the '48' talkgroup on the system it's programmed for, which is determined by the SystemID. You mentioned you have 2 systems in use in your area, each of which would have a different SysID assigned to it.

In the Portland, OR area, there are 4 counties, all with Motorola Type II systems.
Portland TGs are from 16 to 40,000; Clark Co., WA TGs are 40,000 to 50,000; Washington Co., OR and Clackamas Co., OR have a dual system, sharing TGs 50,000 to 65536.
The 3 Oregon counties can and do use each other's TGs.; Portland, OR and Clark Co., WA also share some TGs.
