Support for other platforms

I only wrote the Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) client because, as part of an upcoming project for my "day job", I needed to familiarize myself with a new development environment - one that happened to include Windows Mobile as an available target.

If/when I have some time, I may target other platforms - but this won't be anytime soon.

Can't Install on PocketPC 2003

When I click the .CAB file on the iPAQ, I get:

The file win500client.cab is not a valid Windows CE Setup file.

That's not entirely surprising. The CAB file was built by the same dev tools that targeted WM5 in the first place - the CAB file itself may be targeted for WM5.

That was my thought too. Oh well, good try.

[This was doomed from the start - I upgraded the wireless firmware and driver to support WPA, but of course HP does not provide AES support, only TKIP. And thanks a lot HP for only supporting one version of the OS for this device.]

Yeah. HP.

As far as I've seen, the manufacturer that really "got it right" with WM devices is HTC. I'm on my second one (Touch Pro) only because my first one (6700) suffered an unfortunate "collision with the ground while teaching the 6yo to ride a bike" incident.

For anyone who's tested the PPC client, I'd be grateful if you could answer some of these questions:

1. What hardware platform and Windows Mobile version?
2. Does the program "remember" your address/port/color settings between launches?
3. Does audio stay active when the app is not "in the foreground"?

For me, the answers are:
1. HTC Touch Pro / WM6.1
2. Yes
3. Yes

Love Windows Mobile...

Using the PPC client to monitor my PSR-600 over WiFi at home. Heard the last 1/3 of a PD dispatch, and thought my wife might be interested in hearing it. Opened (from the phone) the folder on the desktop PC containing the .WAV files that Win500 is recording, and played it back on the phone.

Now I just need a decent (i.e. supported, at least somewhat) OpenVPN client for WM, so I can do that whereever I might be (and not just at home over my local WiFi link).

I am sure that there is IPSec and PPTP client integrated into WM. It was like setting up a dial-up connection, but for some reason I can't find it in my WM6.1 (AT&T tilt)

Aha!

I found it: Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Advanced> Select Network.

Under the "Programs that ...private network..." click on "New" and then create the VPN connection.

Hope that helps

Unfortunately, the VPN stuff built into WM5/WM6 doesn't let me connect to my existing OpenVPN server, since there's no provision for: a) selecting the port on which I want to connect and b) reading the certificate and key files that I've generated at the OpenVPN server (and which I use on my laptop running OpenVPN as a client).

EDIT: I have used the OpenVPN PPC client. However, while it does work and does allow me to connect to my home network from anywhere (including a tiny Remote Desktop), its current UI is painful to use on my HTC Touch Pro. The author elected to put the program icon down in the "tray" - which is not visible when the TP's "TouchFLO 3D" interface is running. To use the client, I have to go into Start->Settings->Personal->Today and disable TF3D. Disabling/enabling my phone's primary UI whenever I want to connect to or disconnect from a network is kind of annoying.

Any PocketPC phone that a) runs Windows Mobile 5 or higher and b) has at least QVGA (320x240) resolution should work.

Keep in mind that there's a difference between a "Smartphone" and a "PocketPC phone". A Smartphone may be missing some features that are kind of important for running my client app (e.g. a touch screen).

Thanks, DonS. As always your answers are concise and to the point. It will definitely help me make up my mind. It would be neat to have a 106 that size:)

Unfortunately not. It is like trying to use Windows software on a Mac.

The iPhone is a very cool phone, but this is an example of an excellent app that may not be coming to an iPhone.

Time to get an Windows Mobile phone
