I'm not familiar with one that has a "solid mast" antenna, so I can't comment on that. The type that has a BNC mount works great, and gives you the flexibility of being able to change to different antennas. However the BNC connector is not idea in the open weather, especially where salt air is involved, so that could be a consideration.

Universal Radio carries the OPEK brand, which is made very well. It come in both BNC, and SMA mounts:

Here in Australia I have used the RFI WM1 slimline window mount with success. The mount is attached to your vehicles' windscreen (aka 'windshield) or side windows using double-sided adhesive tape. Please be aware that the mount is only suitable for mobile ground independent antennas. I am not sure if you can purchase RFI products overseas. If you are interested I have included a link (below) to the online store where I purchased my mount.

If you deduct cable and connector losses, I think my arrangement works better if you are able to locate your scanner in this manner.
I've been taking mine in and out of the car 3 or 4 times a day for 2 years (depending on how many fires there are) and it still works well. But it might cost $2 for the VELCRO. :)

window mount antenna

I use a OPEK brand antenna mount with bnc connectors. I use a Diamond 77ca antenna , with a big improvement over the stock antenna. I also covered the base of antenna where it mounts on window mount with duct seal or weather sealer. It works great .
