To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi everyone,

I have a XPR5550e. I want to program one of the control buttons on the mic to be monitor (open squelch). This function seems to be missing. There is perminent monitor on, but no toggle. This does exist in the other XPR radios (Eg xpr7550e for which I have the monitor button programmed for toggle and perminent (long press). Does anyone know if this feature was omitted or am I just missing it? I want the short press to be monitor, the long press to be perminent monitor. The former (monitor) function seems to be missing while the latter (perminent monitor) is there in CPS. Any ideas? Thanks!

Nope you aren't missing it. Only monitor on or off is an option. Can't have it toggle for whatever reason.

How odd, and frustrating! I love that feature on the HTs. Do you know if there is a feature request or feedback line within Motorola? I can at least try that :) Thanks K2NEC, appreciate your response

That's the first one I have seen haha. I imagine if you start a chat with Moto Solutions they would probably be able to point you in the right direction.

The mic. When the mic is on the "hook" or the "mic clip" the PL tone is activated. When the mic is off the "hook" or "mic clip" the PL tone is de activated and it is in "Open Squelch" mode. (Monitor) Your mic would essentially be your "toggle".

oh you meant that literally. The mic I use is clipped to a standard mic clip. There are no buttons there and no sensors. Also, I use the remote control head for the XPR5550e

I have never gotten the mic to toggle anything when it is on/off the clip. is there a Monitor function for that? Seems illadvised though to have the mic blast static continuously whenever it is clipped..

OK. That standard mic clip is the HUB Hang Up Box. When the mic is attached to the HUB, it activates the PL. When its off the HUB, it de activates the PL. No sensors or extra buttons needed. Its a spring clip mounted to the inside of the clip and when it contacts the HUB it completes the circuit.

Fascinating, I never knew that. Thank you. What does one use it for? As I said, toggling monitor (open squelch) each time the mic was clipped, would be super annoying..

Some systems were set up in a way that used multiple PL tones on one repeater. When the mic was on the clip, you would only hear traffic from your PL tone. When you took the mic off the clip, you would hear everyone. Basically when you picked up the mic to talk you would know if someone else was using the repeater so you wouldnt interupt them.

That makes sense! OK thank you. Really appreciate that insight. So, question: Do you happen to also know why on the XPR5550e the toggle for monitor doesnt exist as a function, but the permanent monitor on/off does? Just curious as my experience with moto is that their products are extremely well thought out and therefore 'there must be a reason' is what I'm thinking.. My use case on my hand helds (e.g. XPR7550e) is that a single button is used for monitor toggle (short press) and monitor permanent on/off (long press), which I use when analog reception is spotty. Its extremely useful
